  • Trials of Tank-2000 contenders will start in January (Jan. 2)

M-1A2 Abrams MBTThe trials of short-listed four Main Battle Tanks of  $8 billion Turkish Tank-2000 project will start in January. The tests and demonstrations will be completed by July, 2000 before the announcement about decision of winner. 

The contenders has started the send the sample tanks to the Turkey. The US General Dynamics Land System/BMC-Nurol had left a M-1A2 Abrams, demonstrated in Ankara for IDEF-99 on September 1999, in Turkey for the trials. The strong-contender German KMW/Otokar's sample Leopard IIA6 reached Turkey yesterday. French GIAT/Roketsan LeClerc and Ukraine's Ukreksport/Asmaş T-84 tanks will be expected to arrive to Turkey at the end of January. According to the military sources, the fire tests will be performed on SerefliKochisar (Ankara), where a new maneuver site has been constructed under a cost of $500 thousands, amphibic tests on Kayseri, the winter tests on Sarikamis (Erzurum) and summer tests on Diyarbakir.
