WGMU to switch to My Network TV Sept. 5th.
Thanks to an email, I’ve been given a phone number, which viewers can use to report any reception problems at WGMU (WBVT). I’ve been told that if they’re not aware of any problem, then they are not able to make the proper corrections. So when the signal fails, you can call their corporate broadcast toll-free control help line at 1-866-823-8828.
WBVT-LP 39 has officially changed its call letters to WGMU-CA on June 9th 2005. Other call letters used by WGMU in the past include WWIN (1994-1995).

Equity Broadcasting had purchased the bankrupt WBVT back in February 2004 along with several translators.
Equity is largely to blame for WGMU's technical problems. They carry out most of their operations out of their home-office in Little Rock, Arkansas. This means that there is actually no one in Vermont to monitor the signal. WGMU is limited to only a small sales staff.
Some viewers may have noticed that the Equity-like technical problems (described below) had actually began before it was known that the Arkansas company had became the owner. This is simply because they had actually took over control of the station before the purchase was made official.
NYN, LLC is sometimes referred to as the owner of WGMU-CA. Thanks to Jonathan Proulx for providing some background info. It turns out that NYN is Equity Broadcasting's cellular network of Low Power Television Stations serving the local Vermont area. (BTW: LLC means limited liability company) In other words NYN, LLC is simply another name for WGMU-CA.
A note about suffixes. The -LP (as in WWBI-LP) is used in the U.S. for low power stations while the -CA (WGMU-CA) is used for low power stations protected from interference from primary stations. All other stations (apart from translators and DTV) officially end in the -TV suffix (i.e. WCAX-TV, although this site will identify such stations as WCAX for short).
WGMU has a bad habit of going on and off the air intermittently. This from TV Hat contributor and Channel 39 viewer Mitchell Spector:
As of tonight (December 17th 2003), WBVT has stopped broadcasting over-the-air. Tuning into channel 52, I now just get static snow and faintly pick up the audio from the local CFCF-12 station -- in other words, the signal from St. Albans has ceased.
They were broadcasting as recently as late Tuesday night (December 15th) though. I'll see what happens over the next several days...
The WBVT signal did eventually return, but for how long? Earlier that seem week, Fybush.com reported that UPN 39 in Burlington was broadcasting an error message. Spector provided us with a similar report:
I often see error messages saying 'ALARM' or that their MPEG decoding equipment is having problems, maybe 50% of the time.
Montreal is just outside the limits of its St. Albans, over the air, repeater signal on UHF channel 52. The only thing I was ever able to pick up in NDG was continuous live coverage of a snowstorm. But the signal has been available to some Montrealers, especially those who happen to live on the south side of the Westmount Summit. In light of the recent financial problems, the signal just isn't as strong as it once was, when it actually is on the air. Also WGMU's current local schedule now consists mainly of paid-programming, in addition to My Network stuff. Unfortunately, WGMU was never available on Canadian cable systems.
Contrary to popular belief, UPN did not stand for The United Parcel Network. It actually stood for The United Paramount Network. And yes it was an actual broadcast network with local affiliates. Its availability in Canada was very limited, and many Montrealers haven't even heard of it. Then again, the service wasn't even really all that popular in areas where it was available. It usually finished in last place out of the six networks.
