General Notes (Husband)

1. I use this person to tie all of my line together. There is no proof that the children listed are brothers or even related.
2. NOTE 2: George and Wiley at first were thought to have been children of Asa
Lorenzo Bullard. This has not been proven so I have placed them here for the
time being.
3. SOURCE #1: From a genealogy by Lt. Gen. Robert L. Bullard dated 31 Aug. 1930; on last page (noted as pg 59), note #4 he states "From the foregoing and from writing or inquiry of many groups of Bullards scattered over the U.S. I conclude that all of the name from southern VA to Fla. and westward come of JAMES, JOHN and ROBERT who came from England to N.C. about 1760 and that all from New England to VA and westward come of the Bullards who came to Dedham and Watertown, Mass. about 1635". signed R.L.B.

5. Nathan and Sarah Stroud are named as Lorenzo Doe Bullard's parents in his (Lorenzo's) Bible.
6. From Land records in Illinois before 1850: Nathan Bullard, December 14, 1817, Hancock County. Type of sale, Military tract.
7. Nathan and Sarah Stroud BULLARD were married January 21, 1795 in Duplin County, NC. From there they moved to Anson County, NC then to Chesterfield County SC across the state line, and then to Henderson County in western TN and finally to Marion and Jefferson Counties, Southern IL where both died about 1840.
8. Re the move to Texas from Wayne and Jefferson Counties in IL: When my father, Sidney Earl Bullard, died in 1947 we had hoops from a wagon hanging in our barn. He had told me they were from the wagon driven to Texas by my grandfather (Wright R. Bullard) when he came to Texas with Nathan Bullard (his father) in ca 1860. I found references to their paying taxes in Parker County, TX about 1867. Seems like I remember seeing earlier documents re their being in the county about 1863. (We're in the process of moving and my files are packed away). Nathan and Polly Matilda are buried in a small cemetery in Erath County while Wright and both his wives are buried in the Bullard Cemetery near Jay Bird in Parker County, TX. The cemetery is on private property but the land owner has let me and my son go to it. According to land records from the Johnsonville area several Bullards owned land nearby. It is a hoot to read land deeds here in this area. None of this township, etc. jazz. A boundary sometimes goes from a dead black jack tree to a pile of rocks, etc. Of course, the deeds in Wayne and Jefferson counties are more precise. My parents lived on the front of the Bullard Cemetery in about 1920 when the surrounding area was still owned by Wright. My sisters often told the tale of playing in the cemetery. 9. It must be assumed that Nathan1 married a Firstwife before the birth of a son, William3 in 1784. It also must be assumed that a daughter was born to this union as indicated in the Anson County Census of 1800. It must be further assumed that Firstwife died before Nathan1 married Sarah Stroud January 21, 1795. These assumptions are supported by the fact that these two children remained with Nathan1 and Sarah after marriage. It would seem to account for the fact that Nathan1 was not included in the family of William1 BULLARD in the Duplin County 1786 Census.

Nathan and his son William BULLARD (1810 Chesterfield Census) lived in Chesterfield County
on a Land Grant Farm on Deep Creek likely near Ruby. William married Frances Blakeney abt.
1802 likely in Chesterfield County. The families left abt. 1812 likely first to Anson County, NC
where William remained at least until 1817. In 1812 Nathan had 6 sons and 3 daughters. His
sons migrated westward across TN with the family but we have lost track of his daughters
who would have been abt. 15 to 22 at that time. Names are unknown. It is probable that some
or all married in Chesterfield, Marlboro, or Anson Counites. Can anyone help? All leads appreciated.

General Notes (Wife)

1. There is reliable evidence showing that SARAH STROUD who married Nathan BULLARD January 21, 1795 in Duplin County North Carolina (see Appendix D) is a daughter of Lutson STROUD Jr. Lutson STROUD Jr. named his wife and children in his Will written in 1797 and probated in Duplin County, NC in 1798. The six children named are: Lewis, Selah, Winny, Isaac, Zelpha, and Able Croom. His wife was Hannah CROOM. I have verified that the handwritten copy of Lutson STROUD Jr Will on file in the North Carolina State Archives did in fact spell his daughter's name as SELAH.
I am certain that this SELAH is the daughter who married Nathan BULLARD as SARAH STROUD as noted above. This conclusion is based on the following facts:
1. Lutson STROUD and William STROUD are both named on the same Duplin County District 1873 Tax List with William BULLARD, father of Nathan. (They were neighbors).
2. Lutson STROUD and William STROUD are both named in the 1786 Duplin County NC State Census in the same District with William BULLARD.
3. These are the only STROUD and BULLARD Families found in this area at that time.
4. In the Book, The Heritage of Lenoir County, published by The Lenoir County Historical Association, Kingston, North Carolina, 1981 a biographical sketch, Article 727, of Franklin STROUD by Romana Ann Collins Jenkins states that Franklin's great-grandparents were Lutson STROUD jr and Hannah CROOM. Romana Jenkins also states that the children of Lutson and Hannah Croom included a Celia (BULLARD) among the other five named children. SELAH was obviously spelled CELIA here since the Will did not list a daughter Celia. The BULLARD named here is obviously Nathan BULLARD.
5. In a Book, A Saga of STROUDS & STRODES, by Octavia Jordan Perry, printed by Deford & Company, Baltimore, MD, 1966, Perry discusses the Revolutionary War Service of the Duplin County, NC William and Lutson STROUDs. He states that William STROUD left Duplin County after the War and he died in Mississippi. His children did not include a name that could be construed to be SARAH.
6. Since the Marriage Bonds of Duplin County North Carolina, in the NC State Archives include the January 21, 1795 marriage of SARAH STROUD to NATHAN BULLARD with Sampson GRIMES as bondsman and witness, it is reasonable to assume that SARAH pronounced her name such that the recorder spelled it as it appears in the record.
I am certain for the reasons stated that SARAH (aka Selah, Celia) STROUD is the daughter of Lutson Jr and Hannah STROUD. Lutson STROUD Jr. is named in lists of Revolutionary War Soldiers who served in the North Carolina Militia. He was reported to have been wounded in the buttox in one of the battles. Subsequent Census records of Sarah's age groups translate to birth between 1775 and 1780.
Octavia Perry in A Saga of Strouds and Strodes provides information that: ."James Stroud married Miss Lott, had a son Lutson, who married Hannah Croom. " We can assume that these are the parents and grandparents of our Sarah STROUD.
2. Ada, Thank you for confirming that SARAH (aka Selah, Celia) STROUD are all the same person, the daughter of Lutson and Hannah (Croom) STROUD. I had seen the name Celia BULLARD in the book Heritage of Lenoir County, NC, 1981 as a daughter of Lutson STROUD but did not have confirmation that it was NATHAN BULLARD, my gg-grandfather. Circumstanses certainly indicated that however, since historical records confirmed that that William BULLARD and Lutson STROUD families were from the same Duplin County NC Tax and Census Districts at that time.
SARAH STROUD is obviously the way she pronounced the name to the Court Clerk since this is the way he spelled it in the Duplin County Marriage Bond records in 1795. It is also the way SARAH's youngest son, Lorenzo Dow BULLARD, spelled it in his Bible Records in ca 1850 where he wrote: "Mothers name was Sarah Stroud before she was marred." It is also the way I have it in my soon to be published book, William and Nathan BULLARD Family History and Genealogy.
Sincerely,
Spencer A. Bullard
Text:
Winny and Winifred (or Winnifred) is the same person. It can be male or female. We always spelled the male name omitting the second i. (Winford or Winfred) I can see where this is very confusing.
And I think Celia and Selah are the same person. Its spelled Selah in the will. In Saga of Strodes and Strouds, on page 84 and 85 it is spelled Celia. (I had a grandmother whose name was celia, but lots of people showed it as selah.)
My records show that Selah (or Celia)married Nathan Bullard.

Subject: Re: [NCLENOIR] Fwd: re: Sarah Stroud, Daughter of Lutson ...
Ada,
Thanks for the information relating to Zilphia Crome Stroud, daughter of Lutson and Hannah (Croom)STROUD.
Is Winifred the name of a daughter? In Lutson's Will he names and speeks of his daughter WINNY. I have always thought of Winifred as the name of a male.
Also, Lutson in his Will names a daughter SELAH. He does NOT name a daughter Cilia. I mentioned in a previous post that Cilia BULLARD was named as a daughter of LUTSON AND HANNAH STROUD in the biographical sketch of Franklin STROUD in the book Heritage of Lenoir County, 1981. I am certain these references to Cilia are really refences to SARAH (STROUD) BULLARD, my gg-grandmother. SARAH (aka Selah, Cilia) STROUD married my gg-grandfather NATHAN BULLARD in Duplin County, NC January 21, 1795. See the Duplin County Marriage Bond records. The LUTSON STROUD Family and the WILLIAM BULLARD Family are listed in the same Census and Tax Districts in Duplin County in the 1780 - 1800 time period.
Spence Bullard

Zilphia Croom Stroud, daughter of Lutson Stroud and Hannah Croom , was born 6 May 1780. She married John Maxwell on 3 August 1800. Zilphia died 9 May 1810.
This information came from Maxwell Bible records at Archives. Zilphia and John were my GGG grandparents.
Other children of Lutson and Hannah were Abel Croom Stroud,Winifred Stroud, Celia Stroud, Lewis Stroud, and Isaac Stroud.

15. There is a story that in an attempt to rob the mail, some ruffians set fire to the house twice in an attempt to draw him away, but that he would not leave and Margaret ran the men off with a shotgun.
16. Opal says Nathan had a wooden leg.
17. It appears that Nathan, Margaret, and Rachel disappeared for 3 years following Rama's hanging. Opal heard that they hid out in the mountains.
18. Death certificate on file in Brown County, Texas, city of May.
19. I think that we all probably have a lot of stories. I will share one from Sarah Jane Miller\emdash daughter of Martha Patsy Bullard and granddaughter of Nathan Bullard and Polly Camp.
Granny spoke about when the men were away hunting or selling livestock, the women would wear men's clothes so the Indians would not know that there were no men around. This was around Paradise, Wise County, Texas, where she was born. Wise and Parker Counties are neighbors.
She also told a story about one night the family woke up to find that all their horses from the corral were missing except one very lame "used up" horse. She said that they never heard a thing during the night, and she, as a child, was very worried every night after this for some time.
Granny, Sarah Jane Miller Dennis, is buried at the Boonsville Cemetery, in Boonsville Texas (Wise County)

General Notes (Wife)

1. Appears in 1900 Johnson Co. census with husband Nathan Bullard. Birth date Mar. 1853, bn. Ill.
2. Rachel Dye lived with Nathaniel and Margaret. Margaret was a midwife and was gone from home a lot in that role. Opal has heard, but is as yet dubious that Nathaniel had two children by Rachel and that Margaret forced Rachel to starve them. She did seem relatively certain that Rachel had two children though she never married. Another story she has heard is that Nathaniel locked Rachel up when Margaret was gone because of a man that evidently stalked her.
