one night there was a fire in his dormitory, and he resolved to use his flying power to rescue the people inside. To conceal his identity, Worthington wore a long blond wig and a long nightshirt, so that he looked like an angel. Shortly afterwards Worthington became a crime fighter in New York under the name of Avenging Angel. He was then contacted by the X-Men and recruited by them
Not long after, Xavier recruited a few new member and Angel decided to leave the X-Men. After his parents death Angel used his substantial inheritance to create a group known as the Champions. He also revealed publicly that he was actually Angel, but kept his affiliation to Xavier and the X-Men a secret.
After a battle with known as the Marauders, Angels wings were severely damaged and had to be amputated. Not long after, due to the grief of losing his wings as well as his break up with a long-term girlfriend Angel apparently committed suicide in a small aircraft that exploded.
In reality, Angel was teleported to safety by the ancient mutant known as Apocolypse who, through genetic manipulation caused Angels wings to grow back in a new form. Due to the recent tragedies in his life, Worthington had a darker view on the world and joined Apocolypse and his group of warriors known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse, taking the name Death, or Angel of Death. As the Angel of Death he fought his old allies many times.
During one of these battles, Worthingtons old friend Iceman faked his own death. Believing his friend to be dead, Worthington left the Horsemen and lived alone for a few years. When he came back to society, he joined his old team X-Factor and took the name ArchAngel.
