Rasputin was contacted by Charles Xavier, who was recruiting mutants to rescue the X-Men from the island of Krakoa. Piotr agreed to help Xavier and left Russia for America where he was given the name Colossus. After the X-Men had been rescued he decided to remain in America with the X-Men.
In later years Piotr's younger sister was the first to die of the Legacy Virus. With the deaths of most of his family, Colossus had a change of mind about staying with the X-Men and decided to join with Magneto, who offered an alternative way of fighting to the X-Men.
Colossus didn't stay with Magneto for long and he left in search of his former love and teammate Kitty Pryde, also known as Shadowcat. He found her in England where she had fallen in love with a man known as Pete Wisdom. Colossus became enraged and attacked Wisdom and both sustained minor injuries. Eventually Kitty, Beast claimed to have found a cure for the Legacy Virus. Not knowing whether or not the cure worked, Colossus injected himself with it. It turned out to be fatal and Colossus died, but it resulted in a true cure to be found.
