Gambit was a homeless child who was adopted by Jean-Luc LeBeau, the head of the council of the Thieves Guild based in New Orleans. As part of a peace pact between the Thieves Guild and their rivals the Assassins Guild, a marriage was arranged between Gambit and Bella Donna Boudreaux who was the granddaughter of the head of the Assassins Guild. Bella Donna's brother, Julien objected to the marriage and challenged Gambit to a duel. Gambit severly injured Julien and was forced to flee New Orleans to avoid a war between the guilds.
After wandering the world for a time, using his skills as a thief, Gambit encountered Storm who had lost her memory and been transformed into a child. He helped her escape from a threat and once she regained her memory and her true age Storm sponsered Gambit's admission to the X-Men. Once a part of the X-Men Gambit fell in love with Rogue. He has remained with the X-Men since.
