Rogue first learnt of her power when she kissed a boy named Cody Robbins. She immediately gained his memories and personality traits and he fainted. She found that she could absorb peoples memories and abilities by touching them. Rogue became very distraught and found comfort with the mutant Mystique, who treated her like a daughter. When Rogue grew older, she joined Mystique's mutant group 'The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants'. During a battle with the original Ms Marvel, Rogue absorbed Ms Marvel's memories and powers. This time however, it was permanent instead of temporary. She gained Ms Marvel's ability to fly and her superhuman strength.
Rogue was becoming increasingly upset about her inability to control her power so she turned to the X-Men and Xavier allowed her to become a member of the team. She fell in love with team mate Gambit, however she has never gained control of her power and is incapable of normal physical contact.
