History

Jean Grey and the rest of the X-Men were captured by mutant hunting robots known as Sentinels, which were created by a Dr Steven Lang. The X-Men were held on Lang's space station for a time before the defeated Lang and escaped. To return to Earth they had to travel in a shuttle during a solar radiation storm. The shuttles flight deck did not have enough shielding to protect the pilot from the radiation so Jean volunteered to pilot it believing she could use her telekentic powers to create a shield. However the radiation proved too much for Jean to hold at bay and she began to succumb to its effects.

Jean was believed to have died during the descent to Earth, but she had actually become linked to a primal force known as 'Phoenix Force' which recreated her body and entered it. It took the name Phoenix and joined the X-Men. However, Jean had not had the proper training to channel such a powerful force. To begin with Jean could keep the force under control and prevent it from going beyond a certain level. Then a mutant named Mastermind used his psychic powers to induce Jeans dark side to come to the surface which overrode Jeans normal personality. Although Jean broke free from Masterminds control she didn't have the ability to control her dark side with the full power of 'Phoenix Force' behind it. It took the form of Dark Phoenix and wreaked havoc. Finally Jeans personality reasserted itself and rather than revert to Dark Phoenix again, she committed suicide.

It was revealed later than Jean hadn't died, had she even become Phoenix to begin with. The 'Phoenix Force' had responded to Jeans telepathic calls for help during the descent in the shuttle and had told her that she was dying, but if she took its hands she could have her 'hearts desire'. What Grey most wanted was to save the lives of the X-Men and herself. She held onto the 'Phoenix Force's' arm and fell into a coma-like state. Simultaneously, 'Phoenix Force' fully took on both the form and the memories and personality of Jean Grey. The 'Phoenix Force' used its powers to ensure the survival of the X-Men in their return to Earth. It also put Jean into a coma like state and placed her within a special pod which remained undersea until Jean had fully healed.

Many months after Phoenix's death, the Avengers found Jeans pod beneath Jamaica Bay and brought it to the Fantastic Four for study. Jean released herself from the pod, at first unable to remember her encounter with the 'Phoenix Force', but with the help of the Avengers and Fantastic Four, she recalled what had happened and learned what happened to Phoenix. As a result of her experiences, Jean had somehow lost her telepathic powers, but the strength of her telekinetic powers had greatly increased.

While Jean had been in suspended animation Cyclops had married Madelyne Pryor, a clone of Jean created by Mr. Sinister. Eventually Pryor went mad, developed vast powers, and became known as the Goblin Queen. The Goblin Queen died in combat with Jean. Not long after Cyclops and Jean married
