The
words spoken to her in the air, however, changed when they reached the
Weyrbowl and heard the news. A girl had been brought from a search to a
Hold, a girl with beauty, kindness, strength and leadership. Her
name was Yasina, and she was the talk of the Weyr. Both Weyrs in
fact. The new Weyrwoman for sure!
Adelia's first days at the Weyr were full of this. She and the other candidates
stayed in the lower caverns, but everyone always talked about the new Weyrwoman
Yasina. Adelia was not sure how she felt about this. She had
been very much in awe at the magestic dragons and their ways. To
live with them! This was amazing. Perhaps Yasina would impress the
queen, but nothing was decided yet!
When Adelia met Yasina however, she become of everyone else's opinion.
Yasina was such a wonderful person, she most likely would impress.
As much as Adelia wanted it, the position of Weyrwoman seemed not to be
hers.
The Weyr awaited impatiently the hatching of the eggs. Yasina was
excited, yet also a bit scared. Everyone supported her, but that
did not make her any less nervious. Herself, a holdbred girl, becoming
a Weyrwoman? How could she impress one of those things when the sight
of the gold still frightened her. Suddenly, the dragon's roared.
Yasina hurried out from her room to see what was going on.
"It's time!" Someone called. "The eggs are hatching!"
"Come on Yasina, it's time to go impress!" All of the candidates
hurried out of their rooms and up to the main level.
Adelia and Resan, a young man from another Weyr who had often gone to her
Crafhall on errands ran together. Yasina rushed past the people,
all shounting encouragements onto the sands. The eggs were rocking!
Somehow the immediate confusion and excitement subsided and the candidates
were told to stand in a line and step out onto the sands. One by
one the eggs cracked, and clumsy little dragonets stumbled out. They
crawled towards the candidates, bronze, brown, blue, and green. The bronze
reached a boy and flung himself aside before he reached Resan and flopped
at his feet.
All of the little dragons found a rider and the unbreakable loving, telepathic
bonds between dragon and rider were made. Adelia and Yasina were
the only candidates left, all of the other queens candidates had impressed
green. The gold was the only egg left.
Adelia felt her heart sink. She had been excited, she would be a
dragonrider, even if she impressed a green, but now, up against Yasina,
she had no chance of impression at all.
The egg cracked, and a hush went up through the crowd. As the little
gold dragon, scales glinting in the sun stepped out, the dragons hummed.
This was their new queen, the mightiest among them.
Both candidates took a step forward, the queen squawked and stumbled forward
as well. Adelia focused her mind on projecting love and affectionate
thoughts to draw the dragon. It was hard, she had seen what the other
dragons had done to the candidates they did not like. This dragonet
was bigger than the others. She was afraid, but fear was bad.
Don't be afraid and it won't hurt you. She told herself, forcing
another step forward to match Yasina. Everyone expected Yasina to
impress, saw the hatchling moving towards Yasina, but it turned!
Turned and Adelia took a step forward and reached out to pet its eye ridges.
A feeling of joy swept through her, of comfort, of love from this creature
and for this creature. Her defender, her protector, a friend aware
of her feelings and desires, and dragon to love her always.
Adelia patted the gold dragon fondly. Gold Elieth. How Adelia
knew the dragon's name she didn't know, she knew only that Elieth was hers,
and she Elieths, forever.
