Over the months a
new project began, whether the elders of the Weyr liked it or not.
Surprisingly, they were not terribly arguementive. Adelia was respected,
and with R'san helping her, the project went well. Everyone thought
the two made a great team. R'san should become Weyrleader, they thought.
Elieth grew over
these months into a big strong queen. Adelia found it hard to keep
up with the dragon's growth.
Then one day as she
and R'san were walking together, there came a great roar from the dragons.
Adelia looked around for the cause of the comotion, R'san only grinned.
When she saw him grinning, she gave him another one of her stares, thought
it was playful by now, and demanded to know what was so funny.
"Nothing's funny."
He said and stoped grinning. Instead his face donned a serious look.
"It is time you see,
the bronzes have blooded their kill, Elieth will rise to mate!" Adelia
knew by his face that he was hoping his dragon would catch hers,
and by now she knew the results, all of them. She signed. R'san
was her partner already, it seemed. The weyr needed his leadership,
so with luck Palinth would cath her Elieth.
"Come on!" He said,
grabbing her arm and hauling her down the hall to the feeding grounds.
He found it more difficult to move her than he expected, but he managed.
Adelia could feel
her dragon's hunger and was shocked when M'lay told her she must not let
Elieth eat, only blood her kill. How could she fight that hunger?
But she did, somehow,
and Elieth sucked her kill of blood, though she was in a rage that shook
the ground. It took much effot and strong Adelia wavered from it.
R'san caught her arm to steady her but she didn't need it, for suddenly
Elieth rose in flight. With a roar the bronzes arose after her, and
it began.
Adelia made her way
to a bench which she clutched, eyes rooted on her goldend dragon and the
mass of bronzes that followed. It was as if she was up there with
her dragon, swooping, diving, taunting thebronzes that chased her hopefully.
On the ground, their riders were eyeing Adelia, none more than R'san.
The older bronzes
dropped out. R'san's Palinth looked tired. Oh no! Adelia thought
vaguely, but her might was more with Elieth.
Only three left.
R'san moved ot sit beside Adelia, sweating with effort to keep Palinth
aloft. Adelia was not herself, but her dragon, wheeling in hte skies.
Palinth dropped off.
A hush fell through the weyr. Most wanted R'san to be Weyrleader.
Silently they willed him strength, R'san grabbed Adelia's arm and if she
had been herself, she would have willed him strength as well. On
an unconscious level, she steered her dragon to swoop low towards him,
and Palanths wing covered over her and they fell.
Adelia and R'san
took their leadership seriously. Now that they had control of the
weyr, their project of cultivating food became unhindered. Dragon
Fang Weyr became a buisy place, fighting thread and working to sustain
itself. From Elieth and Palinth came clutches of powerful dragons,
and candidates were seached to match them. The Weyr itself was small,
not widely known throughout Pern, but that was all right with them.
They managed the area they controlled well, and were remembered by future
weyrleaders as the great first pair that brought the Weyr to life.
