Alpha Beta Theta felt the need to educate young minorities on the campus of Southern Polytechnic State University on the crippling disease called Sickle-Cell Anemia and how it impact their lives. Many students didn?t know that Sickle-Cell Anemia is an inherited disorder that afficts mainly blacks of African decent, but it can also occur in Indians, Middle Easterners and residents of some Mediterranean countries.

Alpha Beta Theta contacted the Sick-A-Cell Foundation of Atlanta and with assistance from Mr. Harold Dobbs and the outreach coordinator, they planned an extremely successful event to kick off the fall semester. Free Sick-A-Cell screenings were conducted and the students were educated by Mr. Dobbs on the fact that about one in every eight American blacks carries the defective gene that causes the disorder. The brothers of ABT distributed literature and recruited students to be screened. Mr. Dobbs set a personal goal of screening 30 people: Alpha Beta Theta exceeded his goal by recruiting 41 participants. The members of Alpha Beta Theta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. are extremely proud of this event and plan to make it part of their annual Social Action calendar event.
