About Tycarreg Pointers

Barbara Theobald writes...

Penebeck Paduana (Amy), our very first pointer. Fondly remembered for her outstanding character and honesty.

In 1979, having long been an admirer of the breed, I eventually took the plunge and obtained my very first pointer - Amy (Penebeck Paduana) - from Mrs M Northcott (Penebeck).

Encouraged by the local dog training class members I took Amy to a match where she won 'Best Puppy' and 'Best in Match' - the showing bug had bitten!

Our first litter to Crookrise Firespark produced Jestyn Ambler (b/w dog) who gained me the qualification to apply for an affix under the KC rules of the time (dog bred to have won first, second or third in P Grad upwards). Therefore in 1982 when we moved to a small Welsh village outside Pontypool into a solidly built stone house, this provided the inspiration for our kennel name 'Tycarreg' which literally means 'stone house' in the Welsh language.

Plushcourt Quaker (Ross)

Ross (Plushcourt Quaker, Dalric Gambit x Kopi of Crookrise of Plushcourt) then came to join us and was my first Championship Show winner under Frank Duke at Richmond in 1982 and carried on to win well at all levels.

Tycarreg Sara Fina (Maud)

The next major progression was as a result of a mating between Tycarreg Sparkling Form (C. Firespark daughter) and Danny Boy of Barleas which produced a single surviving puppy Tycarreg Sara Fina (Maud). She was an excellent show dog but due to various circumstances was never fully campaigned. Nevertheless she clocked up many impressive wins.

Tycarreg Santa Fay (Evie)

The result of a mating between Maud and Penebeck Quicksilver (Swandance Swift Osprey x Penebeck Jessica) produced Tycarreg Santa Fay (Evie), owned by Ann Bull. Evie had a very successful puppy career with several BPIB, stakes wins and major highlights - BPIS at Setter & Pointer (1994) and winning junior bitch at Crufts the following year.

Roses in the Snow (Josie)

Evie was then mated to Swandance the Irishman (Seamus, Ch. Rossanara Eldorado of Toberdoney x Sh Ch Swandance Signet). We selected Roses in the Snow (Josie) from the litter and she became our first CC winner at Windsor in 1998 under breed specialist M Blake (Blakeshay). In 2000 she gained a Reserve CC from Cicely Robertshaw (Crookrise) at Border Union. Obituary.

Penwest Pelham at Tycarreg (Declan)

Concurrent with Josie's successful show career we have also enjoyed exceptional success with Penwest Pelham (Declan) Peakdale Jackdaw x Sh Ch Bradgate Kassiopi of Penwest whose major wins include BIS at Open Show level which qualified him for 'South Wales Kennel Association Dog of the Year Competition' which he attended in Its inception millennium year and also 2003.

Penwest Pelham at Tycarreg (Declan)

An outstanding puppy career, winning BPIS, BPIG, BOBs and gundog groups - his BPIS win qualified him for the WKC 'Top Dog & Puppy Competition' in 1998. Declan now has four BIS awards under his belt but has found time to father exceptional litters.

Tycarreg Seren Fai (Elen)

Tycarreg Seren Fai (Elen), Penwest Pelham at Tycarreg x Roses in the Snow. Like her younger brother Evan (see below), Elen is well known for her superb temperament and fundamental soundness - the ongoing mission of the Tycarreg kennel.
She has many firsts to her credit including Crufts 2001, two BIS, two BPIS and Pro Dogs Stakes winner 2002. She was also one of the SWKA Breeders' Stakes winning team members. Elen gained a Reserve Green Star at the 2004 Irish Pointer Club Championship Show

Sh Ch Tycarreg Sparks Fly JW ShCM (Evan)

Then Evan burst onto the scene, a truly exceptional dog, the result of repeat a mating between Penwest Pelham at Tycarreg and Roses in the Snow. From a flying start with his Junior Warrant award he has enjoyed amazing success to become our first homebred Show Champion. A super character, he charms all who meet him with his kind demeanour and clownish antics.

Juennerfly Amber Tycarreg (Saskia)

Juennerfly Amber Tycarreg joined our kennel in 2003 and had a promising start to her show career but then became a martyr to her hormones! Early highlights included Best Puppy in Show at the Irish Pointer Club, a BIS, a RBIS, 2 RBPIS, several Best Puppy in Breed and many other 1st prizes. Evan is her sire, her mother being Sh Ch Bonnygate Gunns 'n Roses. Saskia still has to fulfil her full potential!

Tycarreg Shotto Fame (Charlie)

Tycarreg Silver Finn (Blaze)

Charlie and Blaze, Tycarreg Shotto Fame and Tycarreg Silver Finn respectively. Both have won at Championship show level and had exciting puppy careers, achieving Best Puppy Dog in Breed ... Blaze achieved Best Puppy In Show and Reserve Best Puppy In Show ... Charlie achieved three Reserve Best Puppy's In Show along with many other super wins. Blaze is still working on his show technique while Charlie is a model showdog!

The Boys were sired by Juennerfly Arkwright out of our own Tycarreg Seren Fai. They continue to delight us with their charming personalities and although only lightly shown now they continue their winning ways.

Kiswahili Kai (Tom)

Newest 'Tycarreg' on the scene is Kiswahili Kai (Tom). Watch this space!
