Artistic Statement

I create abstract environments inspired by real life.  These spaces I create are not always naturalistic or realistic in appearance, but they are like environments because space, depth, texture, and areas of light and dark are all created with paint on the canvas.  The subjects, or “characters”, which I include in my paintings, have a place within these “environments” I create.  These characters can be either clearly recognizable or ambiguous.  I apply ambiguity to the objects and shapes in my paintings as a tool or invitation for the viewer to use their imagination, allowing them to develop their own personal interpretation, which creates an intimate experience.

I also use color relationships as well as symbols to create an ambiguous narrative or message for the viewer.  Experienced in painting as well as a background in graphic design, I combine the two fields of visual art to further enhance the aspect of communication in my work.  Although my work consists of painting and is not completely designed-based, the usage of various forms of typography, hierarchy, and color language are all adapted from my influence of graphic design.  My purpose is to attract the attention of the viewer and communicate.
