The report you submit of
your lab work is a form of scientific paper or article. To review the general
rules for writing a scientific paper, go back to chapter 13 (pp. 169-175) on
writing a paper in Squires’ book Practical Physics, 3rd edition. If you
do not have a copy of the book consult your instructor.
What follows is a suggested structure for
a typical lab report. You are not required to adhere literally to this
structure, but all information supplied by following it needs to be present in
your report, whatever form you choose to use:
Brief Introduction to the Physics of the
Problem
You don’t need to go into great detail on this point, nor do you need
to expand the range of exposition beyond the specific points addressed by the
problem. Be direct, brief but cover all essential aspects of the problem.
Solution of the Problem
The suggested form of this part includes:
-
Analysis and preparation of the mathematics of the problem;
part of this maybe covered partially in the physical introduction, but in
this part you are being specific about the particulars of the problem at
hand
-
Planning the programme and outlining its structure, at this
point you may include an algorithm description using flowcharts or
pseudo-code if you see fit.
-
Writing the
code, where you need to include all code listings you used.
Analysis and Conclusion
You will include answers
to questions and exercises, and whatever results you came up with. Also, you
need to provide suitable comments on your results that explain what you’ve got.
It is very important to make comments on your results
to show you understand what you’ve obtained!!
Extra-Credit Work
This part is optional.
If you do include it, you can do so by incorporating it into the body of your
work, or you can add it as an appendix, depending on the nature of that work,
and its relation to the original work.
References and Sources
This is a very important
part of the report, in case you used any reference(s) in your work. Please
review the part of the outline concerned with Academic Honesty.
We prefer that reports
be submitted as Mathematica notebooks. But for the first two reports
Microsoft Word documents will be acceptable. We have provided below a link to
suggested notebook report template that you can use and modify to your needs.
Typically you can use this template by overwriting the dummy text in it.
