History

In the year 1999, a physical education-sport climbing student by the name of Crissie Malay discovered the wonders of climbing as a sport.  Scaling the wall and experiencing excruciating pain led to many benefits which she soon discovered - the climber becomes stronger, leaner, and more flexible... other than that, the climber exercises not only his or her physique but challenges the mind as well.

In 2000, the Sport Climbing Club was made, with Crissie as the founder and head, starting with more than 30 members and Mrs. Paz Santos who volunteered to be the club's faculty moderator.  Training sessions were arranged at Power UP Center for Climbing and Fitness in Pasig, with Tom Sales as the coach.  Regular training was crucial so that the school could credit the club with the status of "varsity" in the next year.  In time, as the academic load of the members increased, so did the the number of members reduce.  The club was blessed with members who stayed: Mhaiya Caņete, Mike Nuguit, Affie Yap, Lala Ona, and Dadsie Coscolluela.

In the same year, the club then joined the annual sports festival of the school.  They brought in a mobile wall and created a competition inviting the La Salle Greenhills Climbing Club and other students of UA&P who dared to try the wall.  It was in that moment that Miel Pahati attempted the wall for the first time.  He then joined the club seeing how great climbing was and still is.

They were then joining several competitions and even won most of them.

By the year 2001, the school graced the club with the varsity status.  This time, the team brought in a new coach, Ipe Borja.  New faces joined the team - Martin Mendoza, Sarah Gonzales, BJ Enriquez, Emman Tiu Sonco, Trix Faylon, and Marion Penales.  The team was developing quickly.

It was in the summer of 2002, after the school year, that Miel Pahati and Crissie Malay joined their very first national competitions.  The climbing community were stunned with Miel's performance.  Miel made it in the National Team and Crissie ranked 10th in the Philippines.

In the school year of 2002 to 2003, Mylene Palacios-Imao coached the team.  This time, training was more difficult, yet beneficial.  The team felt as if they were getting stronger...  However, it was also in this same year that both Miel and Crissie were injured.  Miel with his AXL- knee injury and the malaria that followed (in 2003), and Crissie with her ankle sprain and regular tendon cyst that continues to pop up.

Coach Mylene then had to let go of the team due to business matters and was then substituted by Kim Imao, her husband, who still coaches the team to this day.

Although injured, Miel pushed to join the national league and once again made it in the ranks of the national team.  He then won 8th in the Men's Speed division in Shenzen, China's World Cup.

In the beginning of 2003, rookies then graced the team - Orson Jacinto, Poch Relucio, Jax Maneja, Det Uy, Joey Caparas, and Laser Paraoan, with Mr. Sandy Gilles' help.  All talented and unique individuals, the team grew to develop the camaraderie and friendships.  Team buildings aka road trips were then made.  The team went to San Juan, La Union and learned how to surf, then to Lamtang, Baguio to boulder.  Recently the team went to Los Baņos and enjoyed the University of the Philippines' views and urban legends, and ate scrumptious and delectable feasts at Dalampasigan and Palaisdaan.

Orson Jacinto is now the captain and head of the varsity for 2004 to 2005, and yes, Crissie is still around, so is Mrs. Paz, and even Miel, who continues to support the varsity.

Training Program

Our training program is based on SCAPI's training program for difficulty for beginners.  It has four phases, following distinctly thrice/week climbing days and one active rest (cardio or cross training workout).  It can be downloaded here.  Our suggestion? Well, have a training program, but do modify it to suit individual needs of the climber.
