Academic Committee
Committee Head - Michael Gittings
The purpose of the Academic Committee is to help coordinate the club’s academic events for the year, as well as providing assistance to students in a wide variety of fields relevant to a student in the Forensic Science program.
In the past, FSA has coordinated both guest speakers and tours as an example of an academic event. Guest speakers have come from all aspects of the forensic science community, both in Orlando and at UCF. Past speakers have included Orange County law enforcement, FDLE officials, UCF professors, and past FSA members. Tours are a great way to see first-hand the scope of the forensic science field. Past tours have included FDLE headquarters crime lab, the National Center for Forensic Science, and the C.A. Pound Human Identification Lab in Gainesville, FL.
Also, the Academic Committee will be responsible for creating, organizing, and holding informational sessions available to all club members. These meetings may be held in conjunction with other campus resources, such as Advising, the Writing Center, and the Forensic Science and the Chemistry Departments.
These sessions will cover topics such as: How to Get an Internship? How to Write a Scientific Resume? How to Get Involved with Research? and How to apply to Grad School?
Outreach Committee
Committee Head - Amanda Dupuy
The purpose of the Outreach Committee is to raise awareness of the field of forensic science by participating in a variety of chemistry and forensic science-related community outreach projects. This includes projects on campus, at the Orlando Science Center, at nearby children’s centers, or at local schools.
The Outreach Committee is responsible for scheduling and coordinating all outreach events, as well as recruiting fellow members to participate in the projects. The committee is responsible for gathering all necessary supplies and equipment, and must test all experiments prior to the actual demonstrations.
Social Committee
Committee Head - Kayla Fitzgerald
The purpose of the Social Committee is to coordinate, plan, and oversee any social outings and events held by the Forensic Science Association.
These events are opportunities to get to know other members outside of the academic setting, as well as have a great time! Events in the past have included dinners, bowling, karaoke nights, and football tailgating.
Fundraising Committee
Committee Head - Brett Myers
The purpose of the Fundraising Committee is to raise money for club events. Members will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and carrying out fundraisers throughout the fall and spring semesters. Every year, FSA participates in a number of “typical” fundraising ideas…bake sales, car washes, etc. This committee will be responsible for coming up with new fundraising ideas.
Money raised will be used to cover office supplies used by the club, including (but not limited to) meeting handouts and fliers (paper, ink, tape, etc.). The club is also able to purchase t-shirts and other club memorabilia using fundraising money. Finally, we use club money to help fund the Annual FSA Student/Faculty picnic in the fall, and possibly put money towards a similar spring party.
Members who go on the annual trip to the American Academy of Forensic Science conference are responsible for carrying out their own fundraising to supplement the funding provided by the Student Government Association. Money earned throughout the year by club members is not used to fund the trip. However, the Fundraising Committee is looked upon to assist with fundraising ideas for those members needing additional funding for the AAFS Conference trip.
