Francis Marion Coats Family

Francis Marion Coats was born 3 October 1856 at Winchester, Randolph Co., Indiana, the son of Dempsey Coats and Rachel Cook. I've found him mentioned as "Marion" or F.M. Coats. Seems there was a penchant in this family for using middle names, which worked its way down even to my son!

F.M. Coats married on 11 Feb 1881 at Indiana to to Anna Lydia Brewer b. 30 Aug 1859 at Annville, Lebanon Co., PA. Annie was the daughter of Gideon Brewer and Lydia Umberger. Francis Marion Coats worked as a barber.

These are the children of F.M. and Annie L. (Brewer) Coats:
  • Blanch Coats b. 29 Apr. 1882 in Indiana d. between 1883-1890. I have a lock of hair and a tiny ring that belonged to her.

  • Dempsey Gidion Coats b. 6 Nov 1887 in Carlos City, Indiana. From 1906 thru 1910, he served in the Cuban Campaign as a U.S. Marine. From 1910 until 1918, he was in the National Guard. He worked for 25 years as a prison guard at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. He died 23 Aug 1960 at Bangor, PA, where he lived with his sister and brother-in-law. Gid Coats is buried at Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, NJ. He never married.

  • Gertrude Coats b. 21 May 1890 in IN d. 6 Mar 1973 in IN. Married Harry Allen Kemp on 6 Oct 1915 and had three sons (living).

  • Lydia Fern Coats b. 19 Aug 1894 in IN. Married first to Everett H. Lucas at Allen Co., IN on 24 Dec 1913, divorced on 28 Feb 1920 and returned to her maiden name. There is no evidence of children from that marriage, however, Fern once told my sister she had had a daughter. She married second to Franklin Alfred Dyer on 19 Aug 1926 at Elkton, Cecil Co., MD, and moved to Palmer Township, Northampton Co., PA. They had one son (living). The family moved to Bangor in the early 1960's. Fern Dyer died 31 July 1966 at Bangor, PA, and is buried at Northampton Memorial Shrine, Palmer Twp., PA.

  • Russel Adrian Thorne Coats b. 14 Oct 1897 in Peru, IN d. 16 May 1918 at age 20. He was known as Thorne Coats.


The Coats family last lived at Ft. Wayne, Allen Co., IN.

Anna L. Coats died 22 Oct 1928, and is buried at Lindenwood Cemetery, Ft. Wayne, IN. Francis Marion Coats died 13 Feb 1936 and is buried at the same cemetery.
