Alpha Epsilon Phi was founded in 1909 by seven women at Barnard College. The Jewish founders created a sorority which did not exclude because of race, religion, or social standing. Members were choosen on the basis of fellowship, character, intelligence, personality and leadership ability. The UCSB chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi began in 1967, and went inactive soon after. In 1993 it was reestablished here with a core group of women who are active in various community service organizations.
