On January 15, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first organization of its kind established by and for Black women, providing emotional, intellectual, and social support for college women. Ninety years later, the tradition continues and has expanded into an international network of college-educated women in the United States, West Africa, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands and Europe. The current international program goals of the sorority are Math and Science Literacy, a Senior Residence Center, Partnership with the American Red Cross, The Black Family, The Black Business Round Table, and a Washington D.C. presence.
