Jim Henry, John Borgman, Berry Peters, and Mark Brown started the first local fraternity at UCSC called Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After several years as a local fraternity, the members of Kappa Sigma expressed their desire to gain the higher prestige associated with becoming a national fraternity. Herb Morgan, the President of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, met with David Duval, the National President of Theta Chi Fraternity, at the Whole Earth restaurant. At this meeting Morgan expressed the desire to become a part of Theta Chi Fraternity. The two discussed the feasibility of the issue and what would have to be done to become a chapter of one of the most respected national fraternities. Finally the day came when Kappa Sigma would become Theta Chi. On January 10, 1987 the Theta Iota Colony of Theta Chi Fraternity was established here at UCSC. On February 24, 1989 it officially became a chapter. We are rich in history, rich in tradition, and rich in pride. We are the largest and oldest fraternity at UCSC and we are here to stay. |
