14 Star Bridge - Bridge of Leaps Limerick 27th July 1997

July 27th was the date when young people would leap from the highest point of Stari Most, down 60 feet into The Neretva River, as part of their passage into adulthood. The work was presented whilst original music and song was performed, across the Abbey River where it meets The Shannon, beside The Hunt Museum. A swimmer, drawing behind him a barque of lighted candles, on passing beneath the artwork, signaled the illumination of the work on the night of July 27th 1997. There was an attendance of up to 1,000, including many of the young people who contributed hand print signatures to several thousand star shapes used in the making of Star Bridge-Bridge of Leaps artwork, used to describe the arc of Stari Most, the famous bridge destroyed in Mostar BiH as a result of the war there at the beginning of the 90ties. John Hunt was the main giver of assistance. Other contributors included Shannon Development and Limerick Corporation, with endorsements from Limerick Chamber of Commerce, Charter 800, and Amnesty International. This was a substantial undertaking and drew on the resources of many people from across Limerick. The project followed themes of connection between cultures and communities. It began the exploration of song language as a communication across barriers of language and separation. The work was dedicated to all suffering the consequences of conflict, especially the young, particularly of Mostar and Bosnia Hercegovina.
