FIRST PERSON VIEW
Metroid Prime's control scheme may seem a little daunting at first, but soon you will see it's an inituitive system, that feels perfect for the game. Here's a rundown of each button and anologue stick and its role when in first person view:

CONTROL STICK
The main analogue stick on the GCN controller, the control stick moves Samus (obviously.) Forward and back move Samus in those directions while right and left turn Samus, rather than strafing. See L-Button and R-Button for its function when used together.

A BUTTON
The main button on your GCN controller is set to fire your beam weapon....and you'll be using it a lot. Tapping it quickly will fire your beam, while holding it will charge up your beam. Can be used in conjuction with the Y Button (see combos)

B BUTTON
The B button (red) is used for jumping in Metroid Prime. After the upgrade is required, space jummping, or double jumping can be performed. This is simply an extra jump provided by the boosters on the back of Samus's Varia suit. The B-button can also be used in conjunction with the L-Button (see combos)

Y BUTTON
Another button you'll be using a lot of in Prime is the Y-button, which controls your missiles. Pressing Y will launch the first missile and transform the arm-gun to missile mode, and consecutive shots can then be fired in delayed intervals. As mentioned before, see combos for its use with the A-button.

X BUTTON
The X-button controls your transformation into the Morph Ball. Press once to change to morph. Press again to return to your visor. That's it.

R BUTTON
The R-Button is used for manual aim. Press down and then the control stick will 'look' instead of move. It is also used by the morph ball and together with the L-Button (see combos)

L BUTTON
The L-Button auto-locks on to targets and scanable (is that a word?) items. When pressed, the control sticks function switches to strafing around the locked-on target. If no target is highlighted, it will perform standard strafing. Can be combined and used together with the R-Button (see combos)

Z BUTTON
The Z-Button acts as Nintendo designed it to, a Select button. It displays/hides a full-screen version of the map, that can be explored thouroughly.

D PAD
The D-Pad is used for easily switching visors (by default.) Each direction corresponds with a visor:
  • Up - Combat Visor
  • Right - X-Ray visor
  • Down - Thermal Visor
  • Left - Scan Visor

C STICK
The C Stick (yellow) is used for switching the beam weapon (by default.) This function can be swapped with the D-Pad by user-preference. Like the visor selection, each direction corresponds with a beam weapon:
  • Up - Standard Beam
  • Right - Wave Beam
  • Down - Ice Beam
  • Left - Plasma Beam
