| What Marvel Say: Spider-Man wants a piece of the Kingpin. But to get to him, he'll have to get through the Big Boss' hired hitmen, the Enforcers! Introducing Montana, Fancy Dan and the Ox -- three guys you definately wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley... or anywhere else! Peter Parker gets an out-of-school civics lesson when he learns just how powerful and connected the Kingpin really is! What Jonathan Says to part 1: No doubt you're parents used to worship two bits of entertainment as a child. One was a comic book called The X-Men. The other was a British television show called The Tomorrow People. Both were about a group of teenagers who found themselves gifted with super human abilities and decided to use those abilities to protect the very people who feared them. I will say, with gleeful confidence, that it is no small coincidence that the first issue of Ultimate X-Men is entitled "The Tomorrow People." Setting this book down, I couldn't be happier. I'm wearing a big grin because this is everything the X-Men should be. All of the cluttered backstory of the last 30 years has been thrown away. Marvel has pushed "reset" and started over. It is day one and you've never heard of the X-Men. This "new" story begins with a bang and launches into a whirlwind of mutant recruitment. In fact, before you reach the halfway point in this book, you'll be presented with a fully assembled team of Ultimate X-Men: Beast, Storm, Marvel Girl, Colossus and their leader Cyclops. | buried instantly by the desire to see the X-Men in action. And action is just what you'll get! For the first time in years, the battleground is crisply realized and our hero's truly work together as a team. Their first mission pits our heroes against The Sentinels in an all out brawl over the life of young Bobby Drake, aka Iceman. This is not your parent's X-Men. This is new. This is bold. There are sexy costumes, there is blood, there are Sentinels crushing mutants. This is exactly what we've been asking for from Marvel. Eat it up. Something this good can't last...can it? Also brilliantly rendered is Magneto. I get the sense that Magneto is truly, for the first time, the Darth Vader of the Marvel Universe. He's cold, calculated, and ruthless...yet underneath his helmet, behind those eyes, there just might be something deeper. With the Ultimate line making its debut with Spiderman and X-Men, Marvel is really off to a fantastic start, a new start. Mark Millar, fresh off of The Authority, has put together a tight script and Adam Kubert has delivered some beautiful art that really enhances the story.. |
