Background

Straightlaced. By-the-book. These are the words that describe Mao Zhang in both personality and appearance. Zhang is rarely seen outside of conservative cut suits in perfect condition. Her mind is similarly ordered- few words are spoken in haste, nearly every statement is thought out well in advance.

Mao Zhang was groomed early on for service in the Ministry. This was due to both a high level of latency, the proper psychological makeup and the fact she had an influential uncle who was already a high level Ministry agent. As such, she spent her early years in Ministry prep-schools and then the Ministry Academy itself. Zhang took the teachings of Proxy Bue Li very seriously, and learned Bue's native Tagalog and converted to Catholism.

In addition to Zhang's regular duties, she participated in the Ministry's experimental K-9 program. This was an experiment designed to teach telepaths to utilize cannine's superior senses - both noetic and physical. The K-9 agents and their wards were used to patrol China and track down a few remaining aberrants and rouge psions.

Sadly, the Ministry is a very political machine. Zhang's influential uncle agent became one of the psions targeted as "rougue" (although whether he truly was, or just a victim of politics in unknown). As such, Zhang's career began to suffer as a result. Unable to escape the order's blackballing, Zhang left the Ministry to pursue an independent career.

In 2129 Mao Zhang teamed up with Ethan McBrogue - a man she knew by reputation only - to form Angel Enterprises, a private investigation company.

Zhang has a dog, Hayao, that was a member of the Ministry's secret K-9 Corps. These dogs are similar to BENgi beasts (see pg-106 tech manual) in that they are modified through genetic and biotech means. This, combined with strict breeding practices and stricter training regimines, have produced litters of dogs that are much more intelligent and long-lived then "stock" cannines. Outwardly, they appear no different then other large dogs - possibly mutts with a heavy dose of German Shepard and Dingo - but have enhanced reasoning capabilities. Although telepaths cannot carry on 'conversations' with them, a extraordinary level of communication exists between these beasts and their masters - to the point that basic thoughts and sensory input can be transmitted. Hayao is a large reddish mutt looking dog with extraordinarily large paws. He was distinct from his litter in that he has a semi-human sense of humor and enjoys playing (simple) practical jokes on his owner and her associates. He also enjoys watching Indian holo-vids.
