BOMBERS GIVE YOST REASON TO SMILESept 29, 2001 WINNIPEG,
MB - After a week of attacks, innuendo and legal action between CanSFL owners Ken Yost and Ron Philipp, a football game broke out. The home team Blue Bombers came out firing against an Argonaut team that deemed this game as "must win" scoring first and holding the Argonauts scoreless in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Bomber victory was anchored by the return of Robert Pollard to the lineup, who ran for just under 175 yards on 26 carries. Pollard was introspective after the game saying "I've seen the turmoil in our running game in the past 8 weeks and I have been anxiously waiting to remind everyone why I was #1 before I was hurt. I could have done better though. I really want those two fumbles back, but I guess that's just a bit of rust that will come out over the next couple of weeks."
Quarterback Nealon Greene who threw for 200 yards and ran for 75 more complimented the team "I think we're showing why teams have to be scared of us up the stretch. Our D shut the Argos down in the 4th, once again Howell was great on the returns showing Lammle why he shoulda kept him, Pollard was better than you could ever expect for a player out for almost half the season, and our receivers were working TO's DBs all night..."
Team owner Ken Yost was just as ecstatic stating "We showed Philipp and his group of has-beens who is really the wheat in this league, and we sent the chaff back to Toronto! Where was Baffoe, who has been running his mouth all week? He didn't touch the ball! And how about [place kicker] O-fer Fleming? Man [Toronto Head Coach Wayne] Lammle you must have taught him all your tricks! You take away our turnovers and this game isn't even close. We have work to do, and we can do it. We really showed who the lost cause was today."
The Toronto locker room was closed to the press after the game last night and owner Ron Philipp, who is being sued by the Bombers, would not speak to local media. Sources state he may have taken some blame for the poor performance in the locker room claiming to have taken the attention off of the players and being the true "media whore" as he called Bomber owner Yost earlier in the week.
The Bombers face the CanSFL-leading Baltimore Stallions at home next Sunday afternoon, a game that is to be broadcast nationally on CBC.
