Castles of Scotland

~*~ ~*~ ~*~

Scotland has many beautiful castles that amaze those that visit them and even see them in pictures. It mystifies the mind to imagine the construction of these magnificant structures. Below are some of the greatest of Scotland.

Edinburg castle is considered a piece of Scotland's rich past and history. Built a-top a 300 foot "rock", Edinburg is the most famous castle of Scotland being nearly 2,000 years old in its current condition. First remnants of the estate, actually, can date back to the 11th century. In the 11th century a man by the name of Malcolm the 3rd planned the building made out of lumber. This was the first historical castle on the site.

In the past, Edinburg has had many uses. The list of uses included: refuge for Scotish kings, a palace, treasury, home of Scotish records, and it was even at prison at one point or another. Today, though, the castle is hardly that of what it was in the medievel days; many repairs and alterations have occurred in the past centuries. Besieged many times during the Middle Ages; the list of "conqurers" included: Edward the 1st in 1296 and Thomas Randolph Earl in 1313. All in all, though, the castle is still a piece of art.

~*~ ~Stirling~ ~*~

Stirling castle was known as the "Military resistance to English aggression in the Middle Ages". It was attacked so often that in 1296 the destroyed castle was rebuilt, as needed. In its lifetime, the Sterling estate has been seized many times. The first man to seize the castle was Edward the 1st in 1296, right after rebuilding. Soon after, it was taken back by Wallace in 1298, but lost it in a year. Scotland had power, yet again, from 1299 to 1304. England then owned it for nearly 10 years. 1314 then gave the power back to Scotland; the Scots actually dismantled it.

Although the castle began as timber, it is all stone today. 250 feet above the city of Sterling, the castle was the "capital" of the city; overlooking all of the activities. One of the final owners; the Stewarts, managed the castle and "Stirling became a more permanent Crown residence". The castle is brilliant today although a majority of the castle's history is of rebuilding and capturing.

Haunting: A woman wearing a gown of pink silk has been spotted around the castle. Possibly, the woman is Mary, whom was the Queen of Scots. In the castle; Mary was said to have been crowned to royalty and simply doesn't want to leave her throne!
