CHILD
REN'S BOOKS
I have written and illustrated two books for children. Both have been published by Tundra Books. My first book, Rachel Captures the Moon, (Tundra Books, 2001) is an adaptation of a Jewish folktale by Samuel Tenenbaum. The story is about the silly people of Chelm. They are enraptured by the moon's wondrous light and, not content to wait for the moon to rise each night, they set out to capture it. The village carpenter tries to reach it with a ladder. The best cook makes a soup so fragrant that it will surely entice the moon. The musician, the weaver and the fisherman all do their best to lure the moon down to the village. But it seems hopeless, until that is young Rachel, using nothing more than common sense, succeeds!
In my second book, Rachel’s Gift (Tundra Books, 2003), Spring has come to Chelm and everyone is making things clean and fresh for Passover. At Rachel’s home, a special gift has arrived: Bubbie from Bialystok has sent along the recipe for her amazing matzo ball soup. Rachel’s mother is thrilled. Maybe the fragrance of the soup will lure Elijah the Prophet to their poor home, and he will bestow good fortune on them. The soup is indeed wonderful and soon it draws the neighbors. But none of these everyday folk could possibly be the great prophet. Or could they?
