Activities

Getting out of the house to do things in the community is one of the best advantages a homeschooler has over traditionally schooled children. There are several organized monthly activities and special field trips to choose from.

Socialization--that's the buzz word we hear too often from friends and family, who wonder how homeschooled children could learn to interact with their peers. A few pictures of our children roller-skating, making crafts, or building a website together can reassure those around us that our children do indeed get the socialization they need. In fact, because they are able to spend longer blocks of time together playing or working on projects, and because they also make long-term friends who are older and younger than they, our children can be better socialized than some of their age-mates elsewhere. Come take a look at what we're doing!

Details and reminders for these activities are available on our Yahoo groups list. To find out how to become a part of the list, please call call Diana at(901) 754-1896 or Margaret (901)757-9859

Activites we have had over the years (but not necessarily on-going):

Chess Night (kids and adults)  We offer a few evenings of chess playing for kids and adults.

Nature Gatherings (all ages)   A Fall Equinox Celebration.

Botanic Garden (ages 5-11) These on-going classes for 5-11 years olds are very popular.

Pink Palace Homeschool Classes (grades 1-3 and 4-8) The Pink Palace offers science lab and planetarium classes to homeschoolers. (This event is not set up by the Unschoolers.)  Other classes are also scheduled throughout the school year.

Bookclub (ages 10 & up)  Children bring a book that they have recently read or an old favorite, ready to tell everyone, in some detail what the book is about (don't give away any surprise endings!) and what they liked about it.

Bookclub for Adults  The current host chooses a book for everyone to read and discuss.

Story Telling at Lichterman Nature Center (ages preschool thru 9 years)  This wonderful activity is geared toward the younger kids but may be enjoyed by older siblings, too.

Monday Night Teachers' Lounge (adults)  Bring your homeschooling and parenting questions and problems or provide insight, experience and ideas while relaxing with other homeschool parents.

Skating and Bowling (all ages)

Indoor skating at Cordova Skating rink monthly September through May.

Bowling is monthly at the Funquest Bowling Center in Collierville
