In 1971, in the General Assembly Hall, as part of the UN's twenty-fifth anniversary celebrations, the United Nations Singers, under
the direction of the late Pablo Casals, presented the
premiere performance of Hymn to the United Nations,
his musical composition set to the words of British/American poet W. H. Auden. |

In 1982, the Singers travelled to Jamaica and made
appearances in Kingston and Mandeville to benefit the Jamaica
Cancer Society. The appreciative audiences were headed in Kingston by
H. E. the Governor-General, the Most Hon. Sir Florizel
Glasspole and Lady Glasspole, and in Mandeville, by Mayor Cecil
C. Charlton. |

In 1983, on Easter Sunday, the Singers returned to Radio City Music
Hall to perform at a sunrise Easter Service, the 64th annual event sponsored
by the Council of Churches of NYC. Several thousand people ignored the torrential
rain outside and listened to religious songs and readings. |

Dag Hammarskjöld, always keenly interested in the Singers, once asked them to memorize the Swedish folksong Glädjens Blomster, roughly translated as "Gladly the flowers bloom".
