You take the swirling blue portal to the planet you’d seen from space. It was a blue-green planet, much like Earth, only the continents looked wrong. Now on the surface, it was dark. Must be night, you think. You look around for a shelter for the night and spot a small cottage-like home a little ways away. It’s little windows glow with yellow light and thin wisps or white smoke trail from the modest chimney; there must be someone there. You approach the house and knock politely on the lovely wood door. A second later a voice calls out to you “Just a minute!” a moment after that, the door swings open, a tall, red-haired girl of about 18 standing in the glow of the warm firelight within. “Oh! I wasn’t expecting visitors tonight! Please, come in! You must be frozen!” she steps out to usher you inside the cozy cabin. It was rather chilly out there. She shows you into a little den and shuts the door behind you. “Please, have a seat.” The girl smiles and gestures for you to sit in a chair near the fire.
     “Now, about dinner…”
***
After dinner and a while warming yourself by the fire, you ask Unyko (that’s what you found the girl’s name to be) why the portal to this world had deposited you in her back yard, as it were. She smiles back at you, reclining on the floor across from you “Well, probably it’s because I put it there… I am the keeper of this realm, you know.”
You blink “Really?” you could hardly believe that a girl of 17 or 18, or anyone else for that matter, could run a whole planet! She grins up at you from her seat on the floor “Well, don’t you think I’m capable?” you hesitate and she laughs, it’s infectious laugh that makes you want to smile too “I thought so. Most visitors don’t think a ‘17 year old’ can run a ‘whole planet.’” She laughs again “well, what would you think I’d do? Just create it and leave it to it’s own devices?” she shakes her head, still chuckling.
You stare back at her incredulously “You created this world??” she looks up at you speculatively, and for some reason, she suddenly looks much older, wiser “Yeah? How else would it get here?” she smiles again and her mask of youth returns. You’re speechless for a time, so Unyko stands and turns away from you to warm herself by the fire. It can’t be true… you watch her suspiciously, thinking that maybe you fell into the back yard of the local lunatic.
Suddenly, right before your eyes, she shrinks! When she’s about four inches high, swirled blue and red butterfly wings shimmer into being now, she looks like a little fairy. Things only get weirder. Her flaming red hair and blue dress shimmer and fall away, leaving behind their design, but on a different body... She is still turned away from you, but now about four inches high with swirly blue scales and a red streak swirling all the way down her tail. Delicate swirled blue and red butterfly wings flutter, their silver tips glittering in the firelight. She turns back to you and you see that her now tiny face had changed greatly; it now looked something like a seahorse’s head with a small silver spiral horn in the center of her forehead. Her vibrant green eyes, however, reamain. She grins at you, the same joyful aura surrounding her smile.
“Yes? Was there something” she flutters up to about eye level  and, as you are currently speechless, shrugs, then giggles again, that contagious giggle that makes you smile. “Alright then, shall we see to your lodging for the evening?” you nod, still stunned as she shimmers back to human and turns back to you. It’s only then that you notice the little silver star on her forehead, about the place that the spiral was on the other form… She smiles again and gestures to the only doorway that doesn’t lead to the kitchen or outside, then leads the way down to an empty room at the end. Well, almost empty.
Unyko giggles, sits on the bed next to a small glass figurine and looks up at you “I’d like you to meet my little Chaisa.” She scoops up the little figurine, holds it in the palms of her hands and kisses it gently. Surprisingly, the glass emits a small chirp… and moves! It seems that your surprises weren’t over for tonight. The tiny thing in Unyko’s human hands and stands up, stretching it’s wings.
You blink at it, speechless once again, and it squeaks at you, then looks at Unyko and squeaks again. Unyko laughs “Well, don’t ask me! But where else would they stay? I can’t very well leave them outside, now can I?” she chuckles and looks back to “She’s complaining because you’re taking her bed…” at your worried look, she lays a comforting hand on your shoulder “Don’t worry, I think she’ll live.” The little glass dragonet chirrups irritatedly and turns away from Unyko, who laughs and carries her to the door. “Have a good night’s sleep!” she calls back to you, then she closes the door, and you hear the dragonet’s irate chittering as Unyko carried her down the hall. You smile and lay down in the bed, sensing somehow that tomorrow would be a big day…
