In the Beginning

In the Fall of 1994, undergraduate student Keith Weissman initiated a new hockey program at the University of Pennsylvania. The original intention was to start a Roller Hockey Club to supplement the Men’s Ice Hockey Club, giving all interested men at the University an opportunity to participate in hockey. After successful recruiting efforts at the inline skating club, the men’s ice hockey club tryouts, and word of mouth, a team of 20+ players had been assembled. The task at hand was to prove that the group was a viable club, worthy of admittance to the Sport Club Council of the University and guidance by the Director of Recreation.

With fellow founding member and undergraduate student Tai De Sa, Keith searched the city looking for a place to play and a quality jersey to outfit the new team. They settled on the Woodhaven Sports Center in Northeast Philadelphia where they would showoff their new jerseys from Al’s Rainbow in a men’s roller hockey league. With no facility on campus, practices were held at a parking lot on campus. The team started out hot in the inaugural Spring 1995 season with a 4-1 record, but finished with a 5-7 record.

By the end of the Spring 1995 semester, Keith and his new team had proven themselves to the University. In less than a year, the club had become fully recognized as an organized club and had gained financial assistance for some expenses from the University of Pennsylvania Student Activity Council!
