Guyana

[Guyana flag]

Guyana, a country on the northeast coast of South America once known as "British Guiana", is an English-speaking cultural island bordered on three sides by Latin America (and on a fourth by the atypical former Dutch colony Suriname, which is not Latin either, despite its location in South America). Comprising a diverse population of "East Indians" (from British India) and African-origin former slaves, Guyana has apparently become progressively somewhat depopulated, as its English-speaking people leave South America for other parts, mainly the United States.

An organization of Guyanese expats based in the New York metropolitan area has emerged to promote statehood or Puerto Rico-style "Commonwealth" for Guyana — before it is entirely depopulated. The interior of Guyana is part of the great Amazon rainforest, a uniquely rich habitat called "The Lungs of the World" for its role in removing carbon dioxide from the air and replacing it with oxygen.  The lungs of the Earth are dying, and it is urgent that farsighted people preserve as much of the Amazon rainforest as possible, lest the planet suffocate in its own air pollution.

[Proposed new flag for a State of Guyana]
Guyana USA's proposed new flag for Guyana, which substitutes the United States'
red, white, and blue color scheme for the present flag's green, yellow, and red,
with black and white fimbriations (edging to separate adjoining areas).

Guyana USA has two interlinked but different websites (http://www.GuyanaUSA.org and http://community-2.webtv.net/delhibob/STATEHOODFORGUYANA). However, its emailbox hasn't been working of late.

Its organizers give a snailmail address at:

The Committee for an American Guyana
P.O. Box 73907
New York, NY 10013-3907

BUT mail directed to that address was returned by the U.S. Postal Service.

If anyone out there knows how to contact the organizers of that site, please tell them their "mailto" and postal addresses don't work and ask them to fix that.  We'd like to invite Guyana USA to join USI. We are also concerned that perhaps the organization is presently inactive and its webpages may go off the Net soon. To prevent that, we might host them on our own site. So if you know how to contact the organizers of Guyana USA, please have them contact us at us_int@email.com.
