British Girl Flies to Marry Paralyzed GI,
Ex-Soldier Told to Support English Bride
SOUTH WINDSON, Conn., March 27 (AP) –
Accused of having failed to support his English war bride, William Karvelis has been ordered by Judge Horace C. Vibert to contribute $20 a week for her support, or serve a suspended 30 day jail sentence.
Mrs. Karvelis, the former Peggy Burgess said she was a daughter of Maj. And Mrs. John Burgess of Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
She said her father had been assigned to several British embassies and she had lived with her family at many world capitals. She married at Manchester.
Sometime between the ex-soldier’s return to America last October and his wife’s recent arrival here. Prosecutor Ralph Grant told the court, Karvelis decided the marriage was a mistake and became interested in another woman.
Witnesses testified that when Peggy’s ship docked in New York. Karvelis refused to meet her and she was welcomed instead by his parents and his sister, who brought her here.
