Officer Weds Girl After Traveling
24,000 Miles to Bring Her to U.S.
St. Louis, Mo. (AP)
Miss Irene Thomas 21 of Manchester, England and First Lieut. Peter Thomas of St. Louis, who traveled 24 thousand miles to bring her to this country were married Sunday.
The ceremony was in the chapel of the Evangelical Children’s Home here.
About 120 children now residing at the home where Lieutenant Thomas lived for eight years witnessed the ceremony.
Their story book romance started when they met on a train in England in 1944 Miss Thomas started a conversation when she noticed the name stenciled on Lieutenant Thomas traveling bag was the same as hers.
Lieutenant Thomas later took part in the invasion of France and it wasn’t until he had been transferred to the Pacific that he decided to propose – by mail.
Returning to the United States last December Lieutenant Thomas won a battle for flight priority and flew to London. There Miss Thomas hurriedly arranged for a passport and her fiancé found air accommodations for their return to this country last month.
