Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as ‘type 2 diabetes’, is a syndrome in which the basic defect is the absence or shortage of the pancreatic hormone insulin. Though there is no single pattern of inheritance, diabetes usually runs in families. Close relatives of diabetics run a two and a half increased chance of developing the disease.

Insulin primarily controls the metabolism of carbohydrates in the body. A shortage of insulin produces hyperglycemia which is the presence of a very high quantity of glucose in the blood. Hyperglycemia can lead to unconsciousness and even to a coma, not to mention the multiple complications and other diseases that can result from diabetes. In other cases, insulin is secreted in normal quantities by the pancreas, but the body does not use it efficiently to control its carbohydrate metabolism. Hyperglycemia is also the result in such cases.

At its early stages, diabetes can usually be controlled by diet alone or with special tablets. Later, patients require regular insulin injection to control their blood sugar levels. Even so, some patients develop many complications and other diseases…
