I have found many homepages which may be interesting to the readers of
my page.
A couple are the homepages of people who are here now, as our
family is. There are several by folks who were here in the past, and have
since left. I have also heard from at more than one person planning a
site. So, as the number of links grows, I've decided to devote a page to
the homepages of others! I spend a great deal of time (much more than my
family would like) online, looking for related sites! However, if you
have a site, or know of one, which I've missed... please, let me know.
I am trying to restrict the links on this page to sites which have to do
with Iwakuni or the immediate area, though. Here's a bit of what I've
found so far:
The Gannon Family has some GREAT info on their site... Well worth a visit! They have now PCS'd, but still have their Iwakuni info up. Lots of stuff here; he's PMO so he has inside info on rules and regs, driving and insurance, and much more! Also see their page on Barstow, CA if you are interested :-)
A great Iwakuni site is the Iwakuni Hometown Homepage, which includes lots of info & pictures, and even audio of the local dialect (if your browser supports it). This is an interesting site, in that you see the area through the eyes and camera of a native. New URL 10/99.
Larry Brown was here in 1958-59! WOW!!! This is a new URL, as of 10/99; it's now in frames- his Iwakuni photos are under Adventures, then under Japan. I wrote this guy, to let him know I had linked to his page, and he wrote back a very lovely letter, giving some details of his stay in Iwakuni. He said that back then, MCAS Iwakuni was strictly a 15 month unaccompanied tour! (Fortunately, that has changed!) He also said that even though he was a pilot, assigned as the Civilian Personnel Officer, it was one of the most rewarding tours he had in his 20 year career. He retired as a LtCol, and plans to bring his wife here to visit his "old stomping grounds", in May of 2000!
It gets even older!!! Check this out! I found a page with photos, rosters, and info from 1946 when the New Zealanders were here!!! There is a photo of a couple Japanese kids (who would now be around 60!) in front of the Iwakuni harbor of the time! Too cool! Follow their links for more.
Here's a family that is now in 29 Stumps, but while they were in Iwakuni, they adopted a Japanese child, and learned a lot about his heritage. This is something a lot of military families here choose to do. If you are interested, maybe you can get some pointers from them!
Yoshi's Japan Website is back! I had been linked to the old version of this site, but it disappeared :-( Well, it's back. Yoshi Melrose was stationed here, as a Navy Corpsman. He has a nice tour of the Iwakuni area, as well as info about Japan in general.
The Lancers pages have really grown, since they first started shortly after arriving in Iwakuni! They now have several pages of info available from the main page, including a Key Volunteer page, a Squadron History page and even a page where you can buy Squadron patches, keychains, etc.! I just wish all the Squadrons had such great pages :-)
Just found the 13th Bomb Squadron Assc. site, where they have the Iwakuni and Johnson Airbases Scrapbook page! Those of you who were here in the 50's may even see someone you recognize :-) And in case the name slips your mind, the photos are all labeled! Follow the links the the main page, and read some of the stories folks have shared, too!
Links to other personal pages by Iwakuni folks
Lt Cmdr Alisa and Rich Last-Name-Unknown This page was apparently put up by Alisa's mom, after her visit- it is very well written, and has a lot of interesting viewpoints to share! Also, photos.
