First (known) Generation
Heley Stoddard m. Betsey Bates (oldest d/o Benjamin)
m. 5/21/1826, Washington, Dutchess Co NY
aka: Healey, Hela, Helia (?), Hely and Stoddart (?)
born circa 1799-1802 in NY
possibly the son of Elisha Stoddard, who is located in Dutchess Co, in the 1800 census in Amenia. At that time Elisha had 2 boys under 10, and a wife... But who is this Elisha and what happened to him?
found in 1830 NY census; Delaware Co, Franklin Twp, listed as Helia Stoddart; had the correct two sons, one young daughter, and wife... also had 2 extra older girls (possibly Bates nieces
Betsey Stoddard is listed as a member of the Baptist Church in Franklin, 1830
found in 1840 NY census; Chenago Co, McDonough Twp, listed as Hely Stoddard
found in 1850 WI census; Washington Co, Fredonia. Listed as "Henry Stodard", wife Eliza, children Henry, Charles and Almira, all with ages that indicate it is indeed the right family, despite Heley's name difference and that he is listed as born in Mass. Will follow up on this
found in 1860 WI census; Monroe Co, Sheldon, listed as Hela Stoddard, age 61 w/ wife Elizabeth, and three Houghtaling children; Sarah, Delos and Mary... Found them! they are the children of Josiah and Elisa Houghtaling, also of Sheldon (two households from Vernon and Almira Sheldon)... by the 1870 census they are back with their parents and there are younger siblings. I am thinking this is one of girls living with "Helia" in 1830... possibly a Bates niece. no proof.
mentioned in "Vernon Co Memoirs" pg 497, as Healey Stoddard, along with his wife Betsy E. Bates, as pioneers of WI, locating in Dodge Co
in 1844, and relocating to Vernon Co in 1854.
