Family:

Tiernan is the fifth and second youngest child in the Collins family.  He has 4 older sisters and an identical twin brother who is four minutes younger.  His parents, Megan and Eric Collins, both enlisted in StarFleet when they were young, but chose to pursue careers in private medicine and science, respectively.  In spite of their busy working lives, both parents made time for all six of their children.  Tiernan's grandparents were an overworked and underpaid godsend to the family, and frequently stepped in as babysitters when the large family became overwhelming.  Tiernan and his siblings were all born in Ireland, but the family moved to the United States when the twins were not yet a year old.

Personality and Interests:

Tiernan is the most outgoing member of his family, the polar opposite of his shy twin, Mark.  He is not given to displays of temper and enjoys competition.  He is easily approachable and friendly, and likes spending time with friends.  Tiernan loves team sports, but developed a fondness for martial arts while he studied at the Academy.  Initially, engineering did not appeal to him; he thought it was boring and lacked the constant action he craves.  However, in the six years he spent at the Academy and then at command school he learned to appreciate the subtleties involved in it and became fascinated by standard federation propulsion systems and warp power.  Tiernan also has a passion for food passed to him by his grandmother.  He enjoys cooking, and also likes to find exotic and interesting foods to experiment with.

Education:

Tiernan received a traditional education.  Upon completion of high school with excellent grades and an exemplary record, he applied to the Academy.  He was wait-listed but eventually accepted.  Tiernan majored in Engineering with a minor in operations and another in helm/navigation.
