These doors opened to reveal an inner door or ramp which dropped down pivoting at the water line. The inner door could drop down right on the beach or on causeways. The inner door revealed a cavernous tank deck that could carry anything from tanks to cargo to people, and it did. Forward Anchor. There were two anchors, one forward and one astern . The stern anchor was used primarily to aid in backing the ship off the beach after a landing. Gun mount. The 1156 class of LST had six 3inch guns, paired on three mounts. Two mounts forward, port and starboard, and one aft on the stern of the ship. Helicopter pad, where helicopters could land when we were not carrying anything on the main deck. Main deck, just about any type of vehicle could be could be dogged (lashed) down to the main deck and carried anywhere. There is a ramp located between the port and starboard gun mounts which is used to move the vehicles from the tank deck level to the main deck. The tank deck ran from the bow to the superstructure. It had a turntable so the vehicles could be turned and stored facing forward for easy deployment. Superstructure, the area above the main deck. This area housed the communications, and navigation of the ship, the wheel house and the flying bridge. Officers country (officers living quarters) is also located here. Wheelhouse, this is where the ship is steered from. The Boatswain mate of the watch, helmsmen, lee helmsmen (messenger), and an engineer who set the pitch of the screws, stood watch underway. Flying bridge and conning tower, this where the OOD, signalmen, quartermaster, phonetalker, and port and starboard lookouts stood watch underway. There was also a lookout stationed in the aft gun mount.
Captains Gig (LCPL). The Landing Craft Personal Large is carried to port in the upper position. This craft was used to direct waves (lines) of landing craft (LCVP's) and other landing craft onto the beach.
Fire control tower. This radar controlled the firing of the guns. Causeways, portable bridges, were carried on the sides of the ship. Cargo hatch. A covered opening in the main deck into which cargo can be lowered to the tank deck. Crews quarters. The
