Reward For Service

Jesus gives us two important messages in this Gospel.  The first tells us that the following of Christ should not be motivated by the reward of power and importance.

The second message tells us that we should exercise our importance and power according to the Christian spirit of serving our brothers and sisters, and not according to the Christian spirit of serving our brothers and sisters, and not according to dominion, injustice or tyranny.

Daily Bible Reading:  Mt. 20:17-28

Thursday (23/3/00)

Our Death and God's Judgement

Jesus uses the parable of the rich man and Lazarus to teach us the real value of our life, which must be viewed against a backdrop of the inevitability of death and the prospect of judgement by God.

After death, God will evaluate our lives as he did with the rich man and Lazarus.

Daily Bible Reading:  Lk. 16:19-31

Friday (24/3/00)

Administrators, not Masters

Jesus gives us a reminder concerning all the materialistic notions of life.  Materialism basically consists of living, working and administering what is our own, as though God were nonexistent, and as though we would not need to give him an account of our life and at the same time, might refuse every doctrine of God that may lead to a change in our attitude.

Daily Bible Reading:  Mt. 21:33-43, 45-46

Saturday (25/3/00)

God Takes the Initiative

From the parable of the prodigal son, we learn that God, in his mercy, is always prepared to accept the first symtoms of our repentance.  His forgiveness is complete and without reproach.  The parable also teaches us to put the accent of conversion on God's initiative.  Whenever a sinner is converted, God's Kingdom is filled with an air of celebration and rejoicing.

Daily Bible Reading:  Lk. 15:1-3,11-32

Monday (27/3/00)

In My Father's House

The Church honours Joseph, husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus.  Joseph and Mary do not understand why Jesus says that he is in his "Father's House" when they find him in the temple of Jerusalem.  The Gospel stresses the relationship of the young Jesus with his heavenly Father.

If we do not understand God's plan, we must treat that He knows best.

Daily Bible Reading:  Lk. 2:41-51

Tuesday (28/3/00)

Forgive Us, As We Forgive

The Lenten season is a time for conversion.  The Church invites us to trust in the redeeming forgiveness of God.  This parable shows us the relationship which exists between this forgiveness and our compassion towards others.  Let us show our willingness to forgive all those who need our forgiveness.  Do it today and on all tomorrows.

Daily Bible Reading:  Mt. 18:21-35

Wednesday (29/3/00)

Jesus Fulfills the Law

Jesus comes to the respect and bring to fulfillment the law and the prophet.  Jesus teaches us that we must not try to analyze and evaluate the worth of God's commandments in terms of our own desires.  Rather, our desires should be formed with the help of God's commandments which must be obeyed.

Which of God's commandments do we struggle with most often? Whatever our answer is, make sure that these struggles help us grow as Christians.

Daily Bible Reading:  Mt. 5:17-19

Thursday (30/3/00)

The Attitude of the Heart

Today's Gospel helps us to understand the mystery of faith.  For those whose hearts are corrupt, the driving out of demons is a clear sign for recognizing Jesus and his future kingdom.  For those who are ill-disposed by their prejudices, the same sign leads them to non-belief.  They may even accuse the Lord of being possessed by the devil.   Depending on the attitude of the heart, one may feel closer to or farther from the mystery of faith.

Daily Bible Reading:  Lk. 11:14-23

Friday (31/3/00)

The Inseparable Love of God and Neighbour

We should love God completely with all our heart and soul.  The best of our intelligence should be devoted to knowing him.  To love our neighbours as ourselves comes second.  This can only be fulfilled with our Love of God.  Love of God and love of neighbour are the two pillars of Christian life.  What the Holy Spirit inspires us to do should be done without reservation.

Daily Bible Reading:  Mk. 12:28-34

Saturday (1/4/00)

Humility is Truth

The Pharisee, being very determined to fulfill God's law by leading a model life, thinks he is not like all sinners who need God's mercy.  The publican, however, admits his sinfulness and humbly asks for God's forgiveness.  The parable tells us that God's grace is with us when we are in the truth.

Daily Bible Reading:  Lk. 18:9-14

Note:
1. The scriptural reflection of some Saturdays and all Sundays during this Lenten Campaign are omitted in this page.

2. To save time, I have switched from typing the scripts in Chinese to English from 22/3/00 onwards.
