As homeschoolers, we all know the sacrifice of living in a two-income society on only one income. We can all agree that our children are more important then the 'extra' things we could be buying if we were working. But, what happens when the loss of mom's income is not just for 'extra's' but for essentials?
It means it is time to review what you have and how you use it. There are many ways to get more money from the income you already are living on. Jonni McCoy has written a great book for helping you to review your spending and ways to save more money. She convinced her husband they could stay in their same home when she cut the then grocery bill of $500 to only $160 and used the money saved to buy oak chairs for the home.
While I won't be using all the tips and suggestions personally, the book gave me a new insight into doing more with what you have. It is worth reading for the valuable savings it will give you and your family. If you follow just a few of her eleven guidelines you could well be saving a few hundred more a month easily. She states that you do not have to deprive yourself or your family to save more money. The goal here is not to feel cheap or to be a dumpster diver.
Doing better with what we have…for Christians that is something that Jesus has already directed us to do. Please read the parable on the faithful servant at Matthew 25:14-26. Perhaps the raise your husband so desperately needs can come from you and not from his boss. You can really save more money, you can find ways to earn income without getting a job by examining your debts and your spending habits. Having 6 children and living on one income, of course, I know what it is like to scrimp and save and still feel like you can't see the end.
This book helped our family save more money in just a few areas alone. I especially like the recipes such as learning to make your own spice mix, cleaning solutions and much more. You will have to pick up a copy of her book and check it out for yourself. I know that this book is available at your local library or you may purchase it through my link on the Bookpicks page:
