My name is Kevin Kim, from South Korea. However, I landed in Canada as an independent immigrant in June 16th, 2001. Now I am attending MFC (Master of Forest Conservation) Program in Faculty of Forestry, University of Toronto. It is a crucial part of my attempt to change my whole career - from journalism to forestry. I am dreaming of living as a bushwhacker.
Although I am not very familiar with a variety of forestry issues yet, my undergraduate background is, the forestry! I studied forestry for four years in Seoul National University. However, it was a fairly long time ago - 1989, when I graduated. I have had a totally different life - journalist - up until recently.
Just before came to Canada, I was a typical dot-commer, who dreams of being an upstart. Hankyung.com was my dream theater, for one year. As you can see it, HanKyung.com was/is a "dot-com company," which has spun off from the Korea Economic Daily, one of the most famous and authorititive economic papers in Korea. I took charge of Planning and Strategic Alliances Team. Before the company, I stayed briefly in DongA.com (pronounced as 'dong-ah-dot-com'), the other dotcom company of Dong-A Ilbo('Ilbo' means 'daily newspaper' in Korean), one of the oldest and largest papers in Korea.
Most of my career, however, was in journalism. I worked and contributed for a variety of media, such as weekly news manazines, monthly magazines, commercial publications, radio and television. I worked as a staff reporter and writer in Sisa Journal and Weekly Dong-A, for about nine years. [My past articles (1) (2) & Gadgets]
When I worked for those weeklies, I mainly wrote on environmental issues and IT, i.e., Information Technology. My coverage was very broad and diverse, from deforestation, ozone layer depletion, air pollution to Bill Gates, Linux, dot-com boom & bust.
It may seem to be weird, but classical music and its related issues were also my responsibilities. I have written numerous articles and reviews about classical music, e.g., reviews of newly released CDs, concerts, recitals, and so forth. Had it not been for my personal fondness for classical music, those works would not have been possible. I also appeared on "FM Live Auditorium" of KBS 1FM Radio as a commentator for the news of the classical music.

안녕하세요. 저는 김상현이라고 합니다. '케빈'은 제가 지은 영어식 이름이지요.
지난 2001년 6월16일, 캐나다 토론토로 독립 이민을 왔습니다. 지금까지와는 전혀 다른, 새로운 인생을 살아보려 합니다. 지금(2001년 10월19일 현재)은 토론토대 임학부의 석사 과정 프로그램인 MFC (Master of Forest Conservation)에 몸 담고 있습니다.
이민 오기 전까지는

주간동아에서는 정보통신과 과학, 그리고 음악 부문을 담당했습니다. 그러다 2000년 1월10일 동아일보사의 인터넷 뉴스 서비스 기업인 동아닷컴으로 옮겼습니다. 전략기획팀장 일을 맡았지만 몇 가지 사정으로 오래 머무르지는 못했습니다.
한경닷컴에서 하는 일은 크게 세 가지입니다. ▲신규 사업 아이템 기획 ▲다른 기업들과의 제휴 ▲다른 벤처기업들에 대한 투자 판단 등이 그것이죠. ▲온라인 교육 사업과 ▲인터넷 방송도 제가 맡은 분야에 포함됩니다. [My past articles (1) (2) & Gadgets]
하지만 저는 인터넷 '비즈니스'보다 인터넷 문화, 다시 말해 '사이버컬처'(Cyberculture)에 관심이 많습니다. 인터넷과 그로 인한 변화가 우리의 일상적 삶과 의식에 어떤 영향을 끼치는지를 탐색하는 일. '인터넷 저널리즘', 혹은 '온라인 저널리즘'이라는 새로운 경향에 대해서도 깊은 관심과 흥미를 갖고 있습니다.
또 클래식음악을 좋아합니다. 주간동아 시절 그 분야를 맡기도 했고, CD가이드, 신나라레코드 사보 등에 음반평을 쓰기도 했습니다. KBS 제1FM의 'FM 실황음악회'(PD 김신환)에 출연, 세계 음악계 동향을 전해드리고 있기도 합니다(매주 토요일 오후 8시~9시30분 방송). 저는 특히 베토벤과 브람스, 쇼스타코비치 등을 좋아합니다. 지휘자로는 카를로스 클라이버, 귄터 반트, 사이먼 래틀, 연주자로는 알프레드 브렌델, 야샤 하이페츠, 스비아토슬라프 리히터 등이 좋습니다.
