of the national park are the two mountains Mt. Iglit at 1434
meters and Mt. Baco at 2488 meters. It is one of Mindoro's
reservation areas declared as a game sanctuary for the Tamaraws.
A Tamaraw is a wild animal found nowhere else in the world.
The Tamaraw bears a close resemblance to the Philippine water
buffalo commonly known as the carabao. However, it is smaller
and has shorter horns growing straight upwards forming a V
instead of curving in like that of the carabao's. The place
is also home to another endangered species, the Mindoro Imperial
Pigeon. It is listed as one of the sites under the ASEAN Declaration
of Heritage Parks done on November 0f 1984. Treks to the place
are usually going towards Mt. Iglit and a side visit to the
Tamraw Conservation Project located near Iglit. Mt. Baco,
on th eother hand, is located farther inside the park and
is not easily accessible from Iglit. There are very few know
ascent to Mt. Baco and usually, it is done via Baco and not
from Iglit. This is due to the difficulty of scaling the said
mountain.
