Discrete optimization of trusses using ant colony metaphor
-The paper was presented at the WISE(International Conference
on World of Innovations in Structural Engineering) -2004,Hyderabad India
Project:-
*.Discrete optimization of trusses using ant colony metaphor
The Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a new metaheuristic to solve
combinatorial optimization problems by using principles of communicative
behaviour found in real ant colonies. Ants communicate through
pheromone, a deposit that they leave on the ground in varying
intensities as they move about. ACO uses foraging behaviour of ants for
finding optimal solutions in the search space. The project consisted use of
ANT COLONY METAPHOR, along with application of FINIT ELEMENT METHOD to a
2-D Truss.
-The project was completed in summer Vacation 2004
*A detailed study of Design of Column-Beam connections is being done
for Steel Structures. The application is being developed using Microsoft
visual C++, applying Principles of Object oriented Programming . The
project is part of Design of Reinforced concrete structures(Ongoing).
* Repair and Retrofitting using fiber reinforced concrete
A comprehensive study of properties of fiber reinforced concrete
was done. Various journal articles were consulted and exhaustive
literature survey was done and different ways in which cracks in old
structures can be repaired and retrofitted using fiber reinforced
concerete and fiber reinforced plastics was suggested. click here
* Wrote an article "Stair Way to Heavens" which got selected for
publication in KRITI-the Civil Engineering Magazine.
-The article dealt with the novel idea of constructing a space elevator
to the moon.It first talks about the concept used and hoew it is useful
to have such an elevator, later on it elaborates about the technical
feasibilty of such a project, the cost invoved and the advances in
nanotubes that is necessary. click here
* Wrote a Field Report on Majuli River Island
The field visit was undertaken to the majuli river island which was
the world's largest river island but, due to severe erosion and
subsequent loss in land more than 2. sq.m per year,it is halved of it's
original size.During the field visit the problom of soil erosion was
studied taking into consideration geology of the area .The visit was
part of Engineering Geology and Hydraulics and Hydraulic structures
*Field visit to the Bada Pani (Assam) , hydel power station where the
working of pumps and turbines was practcally demonstarted. The visit was
part of Fluid Mechanics course.
