1st wife, Mary probably died around 1851 leaving Thomas with young children. He probably took the children to Upson County because his brother William Whitmel and wife, Mary were living there. Since NONE of the 1st family appears on the 1860 census with father, Thomas, I conclude that they did not get along with the 2nd wife who was actually the 2 years YOUNGER than eldest child, Jackson!
