The event, held last weekend at the twin arenas, drew teams from around Western Canada and even two squads from San Jose, Calif.

"It was a really good tournament," NHL member Judy Zaychkowski said. "It seemed like everybody had a lot of fun."

For some of the players from south of the border, the annual event is the favourite tournament of the year.

"This is our most popular tournament," said Mary Collins, of the San Jose Valenti Rebels, who have participated in the Airdrie event for three years. "Everyone likes this one the best."

For Collins, 45, who only began ice skating a few years ago, playing hockey has provided great camaraderie, as well as exercise and friendly competition.

"It's a lot of fun," she said.

"The Rebels are also a really good group of people."
