-- 12/19/1998 -- 3pm: Team C @ Rebels --
The Rebels were not scheduled to play their game until 3:00pm but the 2:00pm game began under controversy. It would appear many of the players were either not prepared to play in a playoff format or aware of the schedule. More specifically, game 3, the "Winners" game scheduled for 4:00pm, was not acceptable to the players. (Ed. note: Hockey WorkOut does their playoff brackets differently than most leagues. First and second round, winners and losers game versus the more traditional first and second round, losers THEN winners game.)

All teams were requested to submit a playoff lineup with no more than two identified subs. It would appear a forfeit was in the works for the first round game between the first place Team B and the fourth place Team C. In an effort to put a game on the ice, Mitch, of Hockey WorkOut, elected to "balance" both teams with players. Team B easily beat Team C to a final score of 8-2.

The second place Rebels, wearing home whites, were ready to take on the fourth place Team A who were loaded with four subs to complete their roster. Rebels began the scoring first with Lina skating in and shooting on net. This seemed to have angered the subs on Team A as they created three penalties enroute to a Rebels 1-0 end of first period lead.

The game continued after the break with Team A jumping out with a pair of quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. However, Mary tied the score on her third (first playoff) goal of the season. Next, mental lapses by Coach Richard and the Rebels allowed three goals to go in to give Team A a 5-2 lead. With pride on the line, the Rebels began to prod their way back from the deficit with a pair of goals by Kristine and great team defense to end the second period with a 5-4 trailing score.

Wendy improved her penalty shot success by stopping Team A's Eva from scoring. Meanwhile, the Rebels had three chances to try and tie the score. Jeanne took the first penalty shot and scored to tie the game at 5-5. Kristine and Lina followed but were stopped by strong saves.

With the game all knotted up, the season's first shootout was now to be played out. When asked by the ref, Richard elected to shoot last to see what the Rebels had to shoot for. Wendy, again, came up big in goal by stopping 2 of the three shots. The third shot hit the back of the net based on an awesome deek from Team A's Eva. The Rebels felt they were still in the game and went with Kristine, Jeanne and Lina in the shootout. The bench held its collective breathe while each shooter took their turn. In the end, the Rebels walked away with a 6-5 loss to Team A.

-- 12/19/1998 -- 4pm: League Team @ Rebels --
As previously mentioned, the December 19th weekend was supposed to be a playoff weekend for the Rebels' 3-on-3 league team. Due to the scheduled 2pm game players' controversy, the Rebels and their planned playoff schedule was thrown out the rink. The Rebels' 3pm scheduled game ending in a thrilling 6-5 shootout loss to Team A. Our next game would have been played at 5pm, but, more playoff problems. The playoff game planned for 4pm between the winning 2pm Team B and 3pm Team A could not be played as the players had either gone home early or were not there from the beginning of the day's event.

As has been the case for most of the season, the Rebels came to the rescue of the league by challenging all the remaining players to a final game of the day. For the Rebels, this was OUR big game of the day: Can you say winner takes all?

Lina began the scoring for the game and was quickly followed by another goal from Jeanne. Waiting for her opportunity to score, Traci snapped the next two goals into the net to give the Rebels a 4-0 lead. As the first period continued,Mary banged in a goal and Lina punched in her second of the period to set a new team one period goals scored record of 6. The period ended with two scores by Team A, however, the Rebels were safely in control of the game with a 6-2 lead.

Team A scored the first two goals of the second period in an effort to make it 6-4 and a little closer. The Rebels were on a mission: Get everyone a goal and to score 10 netters. In a response to the call, Carol raced in to the zone and poked the puck in. All the while, the Rebels began to tighten down Team A's scoring chances by playing man to man or zone defense. On a turnover, Kristine controlled the puck and scored to give the Rebels 8 goals on 6 different shooters.

With less than five minutes to play, everyone wanted to share the puck with Leslie to give her a chance to score. Having played three games (subbed in the 2pm game plus 2 Rebels games), Leslie was beginning to get more and more tired with each passing shift on the ice. Traci ended the Rebels second period scoring with her first career hat trick (who says defense can't score?).

The Rebels ended regulation with a team best 9 goals but wanted one more for Leslie and to get 10. The Rebels were given three penalty shots and the whole bench suggested in unison to give a shot to Leslie. The bench encouraged Leslie as she gave it her all on the penalty shot while being shutout from a lucky save.

The Rebels ended their Fall 1998 league debut as 9-4 game winners and a league record of 7-3-1.
