My Favorite Sports

Rugby:
This sport is played in matches. The match is started by a kick off. The ball must be kicked ten metres into the opponent's half. The type of kick to start the game (first and second half) is a place kick (a tee can be used to place the ball on). With subsequent kick offs, after a score a drop kick is used to restart the game. After kick off, a player may then catch or pick up the ball and run with it. They may then pass or throw it to another player, kick or otherwise propel the ball, tackle push or shoulder an opponent holding the ball, fall on the ball, take part in scrummage, ruck maul or lineout, ground the ball in goal. The ball must not be passed forward from the hand to a team mate. There are 2 methods of scoring - A try which is achieved by grounding the ball in the opponent's goal area. A goal is scored by kicking the ball through the opponent's cross bar and between the posts either by a place kick (the ball is placed on the floor using a tee) or by a drop kick (a kick from the hands during open play where the ball touches the ground just before the point of contact) or by a conversion (a placed kick always awarded after a try, in line with where the try was scored). A penalty try can be awarded where a side would have probably scored but for foul play by the opposing team.
Cricket:
A cricket team consists of eleven players. Those eleven players are on the field together only when their team is defending. Two fixed positions are the bowler, who delivers the ball to the batter, and a wicketkeeper, who tries to catch the ball if missed by the batter. The rest of the team are outfield players. The game usually starts with one team fielding (defending) and the other batting. The goal is to score as many runs as possible in the so-called 'innings'. The batting team sends two players on the field, the actual batter and a partner who is needed to score runs. The other team takes the field. The bowler takes a running start and bowls the ball towards the batter (bowlers are not allowed to bend their elbow). The ball bounces off the ground to the batter who is trying to hit the ball in a way that the other team cannot catch it right out of the air, or over the boundary, so he automatically scores either four or six runs. The batter has to run from one end of the pitch to the other, and so has his/her partner in order to score runs. The bowler tries to prevent that, he tries to hit the wickets (= three stumps with a cross bar) which in turn are protected by the batter. If he is successful, the batter is out for that inning. A team can send ten players to bat, the eleventh cannot bat, because he has no partner, which means an inning is over. The former batting team takes the field and the former defending team bats. ... The game can last from six to seven hours.

These two sports can be quite violent at times. However, as they are forgien sports, I'd choose them over any sport in America. Just for the sheer pride and determination these countries gain with their teams. They live for the game...
“We would rather lose the game and make sure the visiting team had a great time in town, then win the game, have a bad social and just send them home. If that was the case, then all of our games would be away, and the sport of rugby just lost its biggest advantage over all other sports in America.”
-Fred Miller, Storn Lake Albatross, 1989
