WHAT'S IMPORTANT FOR A P1 CHILD
While
most parents worry about whether their P1 child keeps up with the rest
of class in academic matters, or focus on stuff like handling money
in the canteen, the kids have other things on their mind. According
to a survey carried out by the National Institute of Education on 50
six-to seven-year- old kids, children feel that having friends to play
and to share things with is very important. Their anxieties also centre
on issues of socializing, and are unhappy if they perceive their peers
won't be their friend.
I find
the results of the survey provide much food for thought. We all know
the importance social competency carries in life. But are we doing enough
for our young kids at school, in terms of boosting their self-confidence,
their social skills and their need to build good human rapport ? Or
are we too distracted by their spelling lists and mental sum scores?
Are teachers aware of the crucial importance social interaction carries
in a P1 classroom? Do the kids have opportunities to role play, share
stories and do things together in class, or are they kept neat and quiet
while teacher talks or gives written work? Think about this and let
me know what you feel.
