Untitled By Kris Copyright 2002 Prologue St. Benedict High School-one of the finer learning establishments in the heart of the city. I haven't been here long but I can honestly say that my education has really expanded since I enrolled here. I can't say that I fit in with the people yet, but the actual learning part has been rather successful. Oh well...some things just take longer than others, I guess. Who, me? Sure. I'll tell you a little about myself. The name's De Niro. Cari De Niro. No relation to Robert De Niro...everyone asks me that so I'm just clearing it up now. So, what can I tell you about myself that wouldn't make me sound conceited and wouldn't bore you at the same time? Well, I have really curly dark brown hair and big brown eyes. That's it, I guess. Wait, come back. Don't stop reading. I was just kidding. I'll tell ya more about myself, but not just yet. I'll work my way into it. So anyways, back to my school. It's pretty big -- structure wise and population wise. Despite the enormous population, everyone, and I mean everyone, has their 'group'. I'm not even over-exaggerating. Every last person has a group that they belong to. Some groups just stand out more than others. For example, you hear more gossip about the cheerleaders than you do about the girls' tennis team. And you hear even less about the lacrosse team. What the hell is lacrosse anyway? I never really understood that... What group do I belong to? Well, I guess I kinda belong to two groups. Isn't it strange how I've only been here for about a month and I'm already categorized into two distinct groups? You would think that I would have to be here for at least half a year...I'm babbling, aren't I? I have a tendency of doing that. If it happens again while I'm talking to you, scream. Ok, back to the groups. I'm part of the 'goody' group and the 'geek' group. Now let me explain to you what these groups are. Ok, the 'goodies' are a group of people who are basically goody-goodies - they never say anything bad, they always do what they're told...in English, they don't know how to have fun. I somehow fell into that category. Hardly anyone talks to me or has even made an effort to get to know me yet they slapped the 'goody' label on me. The other category is the 'geek' category. Yes, I like to read. I love hanging out at the library and I always do my homework. So what it comes down to is this: caring about my future makes me a geek. It is, however, more socially acceptable to be a geek than a goody. The geeks are one or two levels ahead of the goodies on the crazy hierarchical ladder here at St. Ben's. The goodies would never do anything bad; hence they have no fun. At least with the geeks, there's a chance of an evil doing or two. So, I'm a geek and a goody mixed up in a school of jocks, freaks, preps, sluts, losers, bangers, and stoners. Bet you're wondering what it's like to be mixed up with all of them, huh? Well, you're about to find out... |
